So from what I can tell, the people that dont agree with making a statement are using the following logic

The west has done things to Middle Eastern countries in the past (simplistic view - if we’re using historical reasons then everyone is guilty of war crimes) so no one has the right to stand up for people being executed or imprisoned based on their sexuality.

People have protested wars in the west which they have the right to do and people should also have the right to protest discrimination in the middle east.

The whole banning of the armband seems deliberate to raise awareness. If they didnt ban it, the western nations would have just worn it, no one outside the west would have noticed and given a shit. However, with the western nations crying, it gives it the exposure it wanted. Same with the alcohol ban 2 days prior to the event.

I think it is all deliberate and planned. The cry babies in the west may get to wear the colourful armband shortly.
