Wearing an armband doesn't excuse Kane for his involvement in this disgrace. It would only be a gesture anyway - a focus for commentators to recite a quick line about how wrong modern day slavery and discrimination are, as they all join in the sportswashing jamboree.
Tru dat. But as Eric Cantona, who has condemned this WC, said recently:

He says: “If you have a player who says, ‘I will boycott the World Cup’, you say, ‘Bravo’. But you cannot condemn a 20-year-old player, who has a 10-year career, who lives in a world surrounded by people from football 24 hours per day.”

His voice rises: “But do speak about the federations, speak about the politicians, who have the power to say, ‘No, we do not go to the World Cup’. We cannot be disappointed if players don’t want to boycott the World Cup, because at the top, the politicians, the presidents, the federations, the ministers… ...The real power, everywhere in the world, they have the power to boycott it. It is too easy to say the players.”

FIFA should drop all national anthems at this world cup and have something similar to the Champions League anthem before games otherwise could be a lot of booing being heard.
Nah, fuck hiding from the issues.
I'm normally against the booing of national anthems but in this farce of a world cup, it's fair game imo.
Let the countries that commit such inhumane acts feel what the rest of the world think about them, not that it'll make any difference.

I hope Iran, Qatar and any other murderous state get booed to fuck in every game. It'll almost make the shit show worth watching.

Reckon if there is a full contingent of the usual England supporters present in Qatar then booing of Iranian national anthem will commence on Monday 21st England v Iran.

I hope so, I really do.
As I said, I hate the puerile booing of national anthems but in this case and with these nations, I think it's a small but important statement to make.
I'd love to see this world cup be a massive failure.

Man City , Newcastle & PSG are pretty much evidence that a lot of fans aren't that bothered about human rights records of Arab nations and this WC looks on its way to be a sell out.

Booing anthems is just boorish, I'd favour a more symbolic gesture - sing One Love by Bob Marley together, loudly, with arms in the air, over ALL national anthems. Don't single out specific countries, else it ends up tit-for-tat. Our fans boo the Iranian anthem, their fans boo ours, nobody has a clue what's going on and the message is lost.

Action to promote equality and inclusivity needs to be equal and inclusive. Sing over them all, a new agenda.

Or all the male supporters in the crowd kiss... :playful:

I find England making symbolic gestures and saying anything at all on this ridiculous when he is picking man city and Newcastle players.

Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Great points by cantona, and I agree that a player's career is short and unpredictable - they have to make the most of it by any legal means they can stomach.

But does that rule extend to international football? Representing your country is meant to be more about honour, but what honour is there in this competition?

Why would kane want to associate himself with this regime/region? Are there extra payments/lucrative endorsements for him? If it has all been paid for, you can understand why the qataris will be pretty unimpressed with these last minute developments.

I certainly don't disagree.

But fuck the Qatari's (as I may have mentioned earlier).

the problem is bigger than any government or organisation. Everything they do is fueled by money, money they make because people do not unite and stand up against it. If people didn't watch it on tv, or go to the games, or buy the merchandise etc. etc. they would have to listen. WE have all the power but those in charge rely upon us not being bothered enough or organised enough to use it

As well as armbands now we have toned down kits.
Imagine if every nation had a black "mourning" third kit and that was all their fans wore in the stadiums. Any footage shown anywhere in the world would be against a backdrop of the sea of fans wearing black - far more impactful than two players on the pitch wearing an armband. For decades to come, people would see images from this event and ask why, rather than the controversy being forgotten the moment the event is over.

Cameras won't be able to hide the players but would think that the TV pictures will be heavily censored when it comes to crowd shots by whichever production company are employed by FIFA to cover the World Cup. Doubt any dodgy banners etc will be shown and even booing may be cut out by sound engineers.

Good job FIFA have them an extra year to prepare then, as there will be will be a lot for them to censor.

WTF is 'OneLove'?
It’s a song by the band Blue, Harry is a huge fan of theirs and has all their albums, he’s had this special armband commissioned so he can show the world. Be cause Fifa refuse to allow their songs be played in any World Cup stadiums.
