Problem I have is if we win the group, beat Japan and lose to Brazil in the quarters the players will come back with their head held high and the country proud. We finish second and the lose to Colombia... Its we only beat two crap teams and Southgate is clueless, players are overrated.

I'd honestly rather Japan, Brazil, any of those four than Colombia, SWE/SUI and Spain or Croatia.

Best way to stop the fuckery is only the top team goes through with a few best runners up, which will be possible when they expand the number of teams

Problem for that in this game is that they both are amongst the best runners-up even before this game. Just make the top seeded teams play in the first or second match. The only two groups where the top two teams have played each other last in this group and the Russia/Uruguay group, and they've been the least interesting groups.
