Not sure if it's the worst...

Back in '92 I was at the home game against Everton (which we won in stoppage time 2-1 thanks to a goal from Andy Turner). In my euphoric state, I bought a copy of the match on video, as was possible within 20 minutes of the final whistle in those days. The commentary was being done by none other than Angus Loughran (Statto), and at one point, Everton put the ball in the net after it had gone out for a goal kick. They didn't celebrate, as both they and Spurs had already stopped playing. You see the goal kick being taken, and Angus is dribbling on about how "the Toffeemen" have taken the lead. This goes on for at least 2 minutes, before someone clearly kicks him in the nuts, and he corrects himself very casually! It's hilarious, really.

The sad thing is that Spurs had only just got rid of Kenneth Wolstenholme, who had been doing the matchday commentaries wonderfully until the year before. Presumably they wanted someone less old and forgetful...

Mind you on the stream tonight they were talking about the Everton V Villa game and he said something about Everton, called them goodisons beat Villa or something (can't remember the exact thing) and had to correct himself later.

The guy doing the pre- match big screen commentary at WHL on recent games dubbed after the event takes some beating.

But we in the US have to suffer Fox Soccer Report with 2 US experts and BobbyMcmahon who once played for a pub team in Scotland know what bad commentators really are. On Mondays we move on to Fox Football Fone In with 2 guys Steven Cohen and Nick Webster whose qualification is that they are British. The program starts with a poll question which everyone who phones in has to answer. Since half of those who call in are US nationals who truthfully know little about what they call soccer from the EPL they find it difficult to answer the poll of 3 weeks ago " Harry Redknapp is a lucky manager , not a good one "

5 lives commentary last night was pretty woeful as well. Aparantely if someone offers the Spurs board a price to buy the club that they find acceptable they will sell. It took Steve Claridge of all people to point out that its the same for any club surely?

Then there was John Motsons continual decline into senility, and a moment where Gomes had either saved at the front post, saved at the front post and gone done injured, clattered into the front post and not touched the ball, clattered into the front post and put the ball in the back of the net, all the while the ball was 'still in there' for a good two minutes, then suddenly O'hara shot and we scored.

Most have been a monday night hangover

The Setanta commentary was poor last night. Burley i think it is, seems to be obsessed with putting Gomes down. Of course he's not the only one. But whenever he commentates on Spurs he seems to keep on about how poor Gomes is. You would thnk that Gomes was the worst keeper in the world. He managed to find one thing to blame Gomes on, when he punched a ball that he might have caught. But despite getting good distance on the punch, he blamed Gomes for not catching. I didn't see much wrong with it myself. If Gomes prefers to punch then i'm happy as long as he gets good distance on it, which he did.
