Hey guys,

last season I heard a lot of positive things about some of our young players. They showed their quality in the NextGen Series and in other friendlies but don't have any real idea of these guys. So are there some news about Miles, Bathram, Gomelt, Vejlkovic, Ceballos, Coulibaly, Carroll, Nicholson, Luongo, Fredericks, Kane, A Smith or Parrett?

Can anybody say if there are some players good enough to make the first squad this season? (Smith, Kane, Carroll, Luongo already get a look in )

To that list suggest you add Jordan Archer (great loan at Bishops Stortford last season, allowing Jonathan Miles his chance in NextGen Series, which he took), Kevin Stewart (Nextgen CB/LB/RB), Alex Pritchard (great little left sided midfield player in NextGen Series, could teach most of the first team how to take set pieces), Ryan Mason (once thought the most likely to 'make' it from the Academy, scoring 30 goals a season in a VDV type role, but suffered lots of injuries in last 3 seasons) and Cameron Lancaster who unexpectedly (to youth team watchers) made his first team debut last season. There are a couple of others who could get on the list too such as Shaq Coulthirst (did well in NextGen match against Liverpool - more of a threat than Coulibally). I assume you have included David Button and Andros Townsend in your first tream squad - otherwise they should be on this list too !

So far there are relatively few Spurs X! games in pre-season announced, but if there are a few more, expect to see all of those included at some stage - last season there was a training camp in Algarve for under 21's followed by 2 matches against Brighton and Notts Forest first X1's which Spurs X! youngsters won (no mean feat). Assuming some similar programme will be arranged, any of the youngsters who do well could get a chance to play with first team in other Spurs X! matches - Milos Veljkovic seemed to do that last season, even though he is still only 16 ! Mason, Parrrett, and Nicholson are all in the 20 going on 21 age range, so really need to make an impression this pre-season - all are capable of making the jump up, especially the first two.

Moving into the season proper, I would like to see a similar Europa League campaign strategy (most of the youngsters are a year older so should do bettter), but being better coached as a group - last season the youngsters playing against PAOK away looked much better than the team playing PAOK at home even though there were more first team players involved in the second match which looked as if there had been insufficient pre-match preparation. That Europa League would give additional experience to Adam Smith, Massimo Luongo, Tom Carroll, Harry Kane, plus allow those who do well in pre-season to stake a claim - most likely from the bench. Difficult to say who the 'break through' players will be at present - Ryan Mason if he stays fit and is back to form would be a shoe in, Dean Parrett - but he may have been overttaken by Massimo Luongo too much, Milos Veljkovic looked 10 years older playing last season - but at 16 might be too young etc. Coulibally knows how to score goals but needs to develop his all round game, so its probably a season yoo early, Ceballos much hyped, but we will find out if last season was a transition season for him and he makes his mark next season or not. Ryan Fredericks played as a RB in last season's Europa League games and would hope to feature again. Kevin Stewart, Jack Barthram and Alex Pritchard all were rewarded for NextGen performances with places on the bench in a couple of Europa League matches - mayb be the same again.

Another couple of names to look for, if ITK is correct is former ManU left back (and CB) Zeki Fryers, who if he signs will almost certainly get a run out in Europa League (and even be a candidate to back up BAE when he goes to African Cup of Nations in January) and Jamal Lascalles (CB) - but probably in pre-season as rumours are that he willl be loaned back to Notts Forest

Windy does a lot on the youngsters as well as analysis of all
the goals scored against us,as others have said and is very approachable.
He is always being asked the question 'who will make it into the first team squad?'
Spurs Odyssey also has match reports on the younger teams and has an impressive archive
of all the Youth team games.

Spurs Idol you're the don, love the work you put into your posts. The one's you did on last seasons Next Gen was spectacular, top man. There's another thread about next seasons reserve league I've recomended people ask you about it as from what I'm aware the reserve league's moving to a youth team thing but I'm sure you know a whole lot more than me. Love your work

Thanks, your words are much appreciated ! ;)

If anyone wants to follow Spurs youth the 'Man' has to be Ray Lo at http://www.spursodyssey.com/ - the report on all youth games are so detailed it really is extraordinary. Windy, as others have said., is also a great one to follow http://windycoys.blogspot.co.uk/- sometimes more analytical than Ray so a refeshimg perspective. Me - I try to do what I can !

That's true, although I'm not sure it was much remarked upon at the time (grovelling apologies in advance to all that did). This is the sort of thing that Levy must have had in mind when deciding we'd probably reached the end of the road with Harry, because we really should have seen PAOK off.

I hope Kane makes it slightly more than I hope the others make it, given the slaughtering he got on here after the Europa games.

:)
I thought it was a bit previous slaughtering him for those games.
He twern't that bad and some folk don't seem to understand that every player (and every human being) is on a different trajectory and, instead, expect players to all be Wayne fecking Rooney at 16 YO.
Don't know if he will make it, just yet, but hope he will.

I read a few match reports from the Next Gen games and although no one seems to mention him, Alex Pritchard was the stand out performer in a lot of the games.

I think he's 19 now, but he could be a surprise package in the future. Maybe we need to get him a Championship/League One loan this season, get him some proper football experience, and see what he's made of.

Tomislav Gomelt is a Croatian boy we signed throughout last season, scored a hat-trick in the 7-1 Next Gen mauling of Inter Milan.

And obviously Soulman Corblimey. Still making his way in the game, not sure if he's 17 yet.

I thought he was widely praised - he was stand-out as you say.

Spursidol what has happened to Veljkovic? I saw him in a couple of the pre-season games last year where he more than held his own against League One/Championship opposition (damn impressive for a 15 year old playing at Centre Back!) yet havent seen much about him since and he seems to have dropped off the radar a bit.

He was playing in our Next Gen Under 18s team. Played most of the games (I think, anyway)

Yeh I was more wondering why he hadnt been seen in the Europa League squads because he looked very promising, then as soon as I posted realised he probably hasnt been at the club long enough to qualify as an unregistered youth player!
