Luongo is a Sydney boy from Waverley College. In 2008 he played against my school side....the kids find it quite a buzz to know they played against him. I went to the Asia Cup Final at ANZ Stadium last night...75,000 crowd. Great night Luongo got a fine goal.....Australia a bit fortunate to beat Korea but finals can be like that

Was upset we sold him and I believe when he left he could have played Prem football, after all he played well agaisnt Stoke on a cold Tuesday night. Said just as much in the ideal squad threads prior to the season starting. Had him down as the back up DM to come in and get minutes. He had so much about him and some real ability, no doubt we were willing to let him leave due to Veljkovic, but I just pray we give our talented young players chances before we either sell them or buy in other young players from lower leagues, so we can find out if ours are just as good or better without wasting money and losing out.

Hope he goes on to make it in the prem not surprised by his good international performances

I would imagine that the head coach would have the final say on players future at the club.

The player might have decided he wanted to leave to get some first team football....I realize that he had only 1 appearance for us but perhaps he wanted to play after his successful loan rather than wait to get another opportunity.

I was a big fan of his for the u21s, hope he continues to progress as a player

I think we should get him back, regardless of whether he will make it with us or not as he will be worth more than what we pay for him

I tweeted him once, saying his name sounded like a massive coffee.

He retweeted it.

Was pleased that he did.

Why the regret? He had good Asian cup tournament, so what? That hardly means he's a premiership footballer, you've got to look at more than that really. Millions have been wasted by clubs buying players on the basis they've had a good tournament

We got midfielders coming out our lugholes at the minute, so I don't see how we could fit him in.

The issue is that it wouldn't be millions wasted as we are talking about someone that joined the club on a trial that we got rid of. It is an example of us not giving our players enough of a chance before they are sold only for them to show their obvious ability.
He was at the very least Championship ability and I think he was PL. The type of player he is I would prefer him to Paulinho and Capoue and he would have been a very good option for us at the moment if he was used by previous management.

Also while the tourni may not be good you can still watch a player and know if they are a level above players in the same team. For his goal for example he took the ball nicely on the turn under pressure like Kane did against Chelsea. He also showing responsibility playing in the Aussies midfield in a major tournament. I understand he left as they probably saw Veljkovic as the more talented which is fair, but when you look at our CM options as mentioned before I would take him over 2 of them, so he could have maybe been fitted in somewhere if he had stayed and saved us a lot of money.

Supporters aren't really prepared to wait though for championship players to improve to premier league standards.
Nobody said lets not spend 15 million on Moussa Dembele, give Massimo Luongo a chance.
Or there is no need to buy Paulinho for 17 million because we have Massimo Luongo. Not many people complained about spending 100 million when we spent it.

We are in a situation now where we are forced to give a youth a chance because some of the players we spent big on turned out to be a load of old bollocks, if the signings were doing well, not many people would even bat an eyelid at Luongo's performance in the Asian cup.

Makes you wonder why we paid for the likes of Capoue and Stambouli when we had this kid already on our books.

Sure, he wasn't (and isn't) at the required level yet, but the last few transfer windows we do seem to have gone all out to sign as many 'bed-blockers' as possible...

I think when we made those signings the board were attempting to placate the manager as much as the supporters. If Sherwood or Pochettino had been in charge at that stage I suspect a longer term view would have been taken and we would be reaping the benefits. Hopefully the success of Kane, Bentaleb and Mason will have shifted supporters perceptions for the future.

I suspect you may be crediting the club with too much of a long term view. Luongo left because he wanted to get on with his career, and with no prospect of first team opportunities under AVB the club decided to take the cash and not stand in his way. I doubt who was coming through behind him entered into the club's thinking.

They had to placate the manager because they 'proposed' that AVB get champions league football, at the time you're not going to do that with Massimo Lungo.

What they should have done is keep it real, they know they can't put billions into the club. They should have employed a manager who would've been prepared to bring the youth through and make that a priority.
Perhaps in the meantime the league form suffers a bit but the pay off is that we have players who have grown up at spurs and have genuine love for the place, you know when they kiss the badge they mean it and we save ourselves a shit load of money.

Another great decision from the manager/clown who was in charge at the time.

"In fairness, he {Sherwood}'s a brilliant boss to have ... When I wanted a chance to play regularly he even helped me out with my move to Swindon … Moving to Swindon has been good for me. I wanted to be playing regularly and that's been the case at Swindon."

"The young guys trust him {Sherwood} and he gives them confidence - and trusts them. Under AVB, it was more about the big name players and not too many of the younger boys were given too much of a look in."

Luongo was always going to be a Premiership player. When we sold him he may not have been ready (though people said that about Kane and Bentaleb), but clearly he felt that as things stood at Spurs he would not ever be given the chance to prove that he was.

I doubt very much that it was AVB's decision to sell Luongo at all.

As Technical Director of the academy Sherwood knows these players better than anyone, he would also know football is a very transient and short term business and managers come and go.

Ahead of Luongo at that time would have been Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Capoue, Holtby, Eriksen (who Sherwood used as CM's) with very promising players like Carroll, Bentaleb, Veljkovic etc also developing.

Swindon was very much Sherwood's connection. And it is really odd that a year loan was agreed in July 2013, and then a month later a sale of 400K was agreed. This would only have been sanctioned by Sherwood telling Levy it was prudent - not AVB who almost certainly had little knowledge or opinion on the sale.

Other players weren't allowed to be sold like Kane, Carroll, Prithcard for example. So do you want to credit AVB for not selling these guys ? I'm guessing no.

I don't think this was necessarily a bad decision, but it was clearly Sherwood's not AVB's.

Say what?
He was the head coach surely he should have knowledge and opinion about the sale of academy players.

I agree, but I suspect the poster was merely having another thinly veiled dig at AVB and a big up for Sherwood.

Well I guess that's the issue then. The fact that supporters aren't willing to give time and wait for a young player to develop. FWIW I think he would have coped well in the PL, but evidently not everyone thinks like that so I can only assume if he made a couple of mistakes people would have got on his back, I assume you were part of the group that did not rate Bentaleb when he came through and called him a TS love child when he had a couple of poor games.

Dembele arrived a year prior to Paulinho and Luongo was not ready then.

While I did not necessarily say that we shouldn't buy Paulinho I did believe Luongo should have got game time that year with no need to buy a DM, in our cups. The only midfielder I actually wanted to buy that year, and it's the same now is a World Class one that could help bring the talent we have through and not inhibit. Similar to why I don't think we need Alli. I'm not criticising his specific signings but the number of signings, as we then signed Capoue, which inhibitted our young players who were coming through. I didn't know much about Paulinho and I'm not going to act like I didn't think he'd be good as he played well in Confeds but I didn't think we needed him, with what we had in our setup. Anyway a quick use of search will show that not only me but plenty of others believed Luongo and others could have been used last season prior to all of our signings. April '13 - June '13

Sandro (Sell Parker, Livermore backup; keep Parker, loan Livermore, Sell Hudd; Luongo game time, impressed at all loans )
Dembele (Holtby, Carroll, Mouthinho, if we have extra funds, not priority)
Bale(Sigg, we will have plenty to play in rotation for back up there, Mason game time? doesn't look too promising though,

Agree would live Luongo to somehow get integrated next year, dont think he is short of confidence.

If Rose, Caulker, Townsend, Caroll don't get many chances next season I think we can then really be critical of AVB in not playing the youth. I would also be a bit disappointed if he didn't give some chances in the COC or Europa to Luongo, Ceballos, Pritchard and Falque assuming they are either not sold or loaned out

That means Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Hotby, Carroll depending on the team we are facing are all competing for the 2 CM roles which is more than enough. Then we can promote Luongo as a backup in COC and EL. He can lay DM or box to box and will be learning from class players

We played a game of risk. Due to the route we decided to take we spent big on players that have shown they are not what we need, when we could have taken the risk of using our own young players. The risk is they don't put in great performances and we are in no worse a position than the expensive players not putting in performances. The difference is we've saved money on fees and wages, and have players that know our system and want to play for our club. Mason and Bentaleb are examples of those who most would have taken a big name over but have now become our best CMs. I reckon Luongo would have been the same.

I didn't rate him but I didn't call him a TS love child either. I rated Capoue above Bentaleb, the thing that pissed me off about TS was that he said he doesn't know Capoue but he's getting to know him as explanation as to why Capoue wasn't in the team and Bentaleb was.
