Luongo went to Swindon with Mason,Pritchard and Hall.
We still own those three players and I can't for the life of me understand why we sold him so quickly and cheaply.
Mason is now a premiership player and it looks like Pritchard will be too.
Even if it's "only" the Asian Cup,don't tell me Luongo won't follow suit.

@jambreck - I believe there was ITK at the time that AVB's failure to integrate the youth was an ongoing issue between AVB and Levy, and specifically that AVB had ringed the first team squad and isolated them form the youth (compare with Poch). So in this regard I believe Eddie is right.

@eddiebailey - with the provisio, above, I believe Jambreck is more right than wrong. We had the midfield (many just bought and no-one knowing how poorly some of them would adjust/perform) that was being touted as the best in the EPL, on top of which we had the likes of Mason and Bentaleb at the club. It is necessary to make hard choices on occasion and allowing a player like Luongo to leave may not actually be a reflection on him so much as an estimation of the players ahead and behind him - and, obviously, particularly at that age it is not an easy call to make. Especially so if he was clearly not ready for first team football but pushing for game time.

Plenty of talk on this situation in the Under-21's thread - if folk kept up with it :) I am not saying this in any way against the lad - I was actually a big fan of his, as can be checked in that thread going back a few years before we sold him, and was disappointed that we did sell him. But that doesn't mean a young player progressing well in a lower league and doing well in a (with all due respects) middling international tournament need necessarily he used as a great big stick to beat the club with (and some folk just seem to exist to look for potential big sticks to beat the club with - it's like they get lifeblood from it).

I've read that we are due a 40% cut of the transfer fee if he is sold. So we have covered ourselves if he progresses well, which it looks like he has.

I was very surprised we sold him, all we have done is waste money when we have players who are good enough to do jobs in the prem.

Simply not true.

For starters, our transfer record over the years is actually pretty good.

Secondly, there is no evidence yet that Luongo would have been good enough to do a job for us in the Prem. There was even less evidence 18 months ago, when we sold him.

Fact is, we can't keep every academy graduate who has a chance of making it. Some - most, in fact - have to go. That is inevitable. Those responsible at the club have to make a call and trust their judgements. They're not always going to get it right. Time will tell whether they did with Luongo.

If he does get proper good, we can buy him back. By all accounts he left on good terms and with a contract clause, same as caulker. I think its the current group Winks, Onomah, Carroll, Bentelab, Mason that the management thought would be better and right up behind him in advancement.

Some were saying we made a mistake with Livermore, and he is doing well. But I think its the same as when you have a nice girl, safe and is good but without the fireworks, better to let her go and be loved by someone properly.

I think you are abit confused there.....The 3 players in Bold were certainly in the same "batch" with Luongo.....While the earlier 2 you mentioned, are a batch or 2 later......

I'm Australian, I am both a Spurs Tragic & Socceroos Tragic, and I can say with full confidence we've missed out big on this one.

Luongo's clearly a Premier League-quality player, and he's exactly what Spurs need right now; a classy, creative player who both scores & creates plenty of goals, whilst providing solid defensive coverage.

As a creative, playmaking midfielder, Luongo's better than both Mason and Bentaleb, although both of them are clearly better than him defensively.

Not sure he's better than Bentaleb and Mason who would both have bossed it if you put them next to Mile/Milligan, but I agree with the rest. He was tremendous for us the whole tournament, and plays that deep lying playmaker role that Spurs have lacked since Modric left.

Difference between Livermore and Luongo is that we made a killing on Livermore, while we gave Luongo away.
If we had sold Luongo for £8m then no one would have complained, it would just had made sense to sell.

The thing Luongo did well for Ipswich in Championship and it felt like he was punished for being sent back early despite McCarthy clearly saying he returned him as the squad was way too young

I heard that the reason why we sold him was because that Swindon matched the price that we had on him. Apparently the same price was on Pritchard who has been close to leaving several times.

We have a price on all the youth players bar one or two and mason wasn't one of them

Stupid decision.. I actually had to look it up to see if he was still on the books and was shocked that we sold him. Will be worth 10 times what we sold him for soon.

You don't know what clauses we have on him at Swindon. I'd imagine we'll get a hefty percentage of any sell-on, and may even have a buyback clause.

I have no doubt Levy would have inserted a sell on clause like he did with Bent, GDS, Adel and no doubt Adam Smith too. We will be compensated if he moves on for decent £'s.....
