What are you basing this opinion of Kono and Depay from? They're guilty of it at times admittedly, but I'd say no more frequently than other wingers who use their rare pace as an integral component of their game. Kono was even once a deep-lying playmaker, he can certainly get his head up to create when need be, much like he did in the game in Dnipro against us upon moving to the center.

And ftr, I very much agree with the rest of your post, so I absolutely agree with your emphasis on more creativity from the wings. In fact, it's this reason I've come to like Alexandru Maxim at Stuttgart. Ambidextrous and pacey attacking mid who in his first full season in the Bundesliga matched Franck Ribery for third most assists in that league with 12, and also shipped in nine goals. All this playing at one of the weakest teams in the Bundesliga, and currently valued at six million euros. I'd love to see us get to him before someone else inevitably does.

Supposedly Liverpool are looking at him now that they've gone cold on Lallana...

Well, it's not even a slight on them somewhat. Admittedly I don't watch Konoplyanka much but when I have seen him, he always seems to take a few touches to get settles, try to beat his man, and ends up cutting inside or trying to pass back. However, I have seen him make some great passes and I have seen him play one touch football. Depay as well; you can't have a spot in the Clockwork Oranje (lol) without some semblance of buildup play. Still, both have the selfish gene IMO- I can take dribbling and holding onto the ball and showing ones individual flair, but what I can't do is take a winger putting his head down and trying to plan his dribbling techniques instead of looking to play the one-two or switch the play or hit the striker.

I guess what I'm referring to should be in example form. Did you watch Hazard in the two Belgium games thusfar? A talented player who lacks space and so tries to do something, sacrificing a quick build up? That's what I'm referring to. The one time they scored was when Russia got tired and Hazard was able to find space to exploit. What do we lack, a lot of the time? Space. Why is that? We're too slow in the buildup of attacking play because we lack players with the confidence and intelligence to play quick, incisive passes, as well as a lack of cohesiveness, the simple fact that our players haven't seemed on the same page since 'Arry left.

Football is a game of moments put together in my opinion: ask yourself how many times this happens. A turnover or clearance gives a winger the ball in space. Not a true counter attacking play space, but enough space to operate. Too many moments with a winger in space end in a poor shot from 30 yards, being crowded out, or even an ostensibly "good" dribbling move which beats the man can stifle the attack immensely. What I loved about Lamela at Roma is that he was capable of seeing these moments as opportunities to put the defense under pressure by playing a quick ball, looking for the overlap, or trying to make an overload on the defense. We need wingers like that, not like Lennon or Townsend. Hopefully we sign one who's more of a Valbuena than a Chadli.

Apparently a top target for us. Can't remember where the Vlad sources came from initially, but I imagine it'll be similar. Encouraging.

Yeah this is the first article that had me researching him so much. I'm not sure how much stock we can put in that article, but I view it as positive even if the sole basis from which the journo wrote the article was seeing a scout at a game. There's no way Baldini didn't at least mention his name to Poch, as that value for those numbers in that league and at that age it's simply a crime not to at least discuss the lad for a club of our level.

The guy has looked quite impressive but there have been stories linking him to a host of clubs, including following Van Gaal to United.

I was very enthusiastic about him, but I've lost all interest now as he'll be out of our reach.

Jean-Paul Boetius could still be a realistic alternative. Like I stated earlier, he's not as physically mature but he's still very, very talented. Would come at a fraction of the price and offer a way to address our LW needs.

Anytime I've seen Boetius I've alway's thought he's Arron Lennon with an end product.. any player who can cross a ball with either foot would be welcome

I haven't seen him play, but simply having a look at his market value trajectory on transfermarkt I think enough is said there to strongly reinforce your point.

I think if we're gonna go cheap though, we should have a strong look at Alexandru Maxim at Stuttgart (as I've been preaching a lot here lately). His numbers at 23 for his first full season in the Bundesliga are stunning.

Oy vey, two goals in two World Cup substitutions at the age of 20, on South American soil no less? I'd love to have at your list of left wingers you rate highly then.

Darren Bent scored lots of goals in the premier league, that didn't make him a good player...Depay isn't exactly James Rodriguez is he??

It's also why Depay isn't going to cost 40m+. He's only 20, plays at a position of need, scored 12 goals and provided 8 assists in the Eredivisie and he's now showing what he can do on the biggest stage in world football. I can't fathom how anyone wouldn't find him to be an exciting player that we could really use.
