I dont think we could afford him now. We never spend big on a player aged 28+

I cant see Madrid selling a player cheap they paid 30m+ for a few months ago.

He would have to express a desire to come back to us, and only us in order to convince me it could work. Obviously that will never happen so let's forget about it, he would improve our team, that goes without saying.

Obviously. He was one of the top midfielders in the PL before he left. He would not come cheap though and I think that c.25-27 million is probably a realistic amount for him given:
1) He is in his prime
2) He has bossed the EPL, one of the hardest leagues for CMs
3) There would unquestionably be significant competition for him should Real choose to let him go. Man City have not had a great campaign and I could see them going for him if he became available, for example
4) Still likely to be a slight discount givent that he is surplus to requirements

A CM of his quality and a top striker would definitely see us challenging much closer to the top. I think everyone who says they would boo him... well, he started last season with some dissenting voices in the crowd and quickly won everyone around. No doubt he could it again.

Anyway, back to reality... this will never happen anyway. :(

If as widely predicted they have a new manager next season he will want to stay to see how thngs develop.
Personally I don't like players to come back though it has worked out for Kaboul

£24,000,000 is too high for a player not making the bench for Real Madrid even if it is Luka, I think his value is linked to his game time and current form, neither of which are great.
I'd love to see him back at the Lane because he is still awesomeness but I would want Levy to offer at the very most £16,000,000 and make sure Real knew that we were doing them a huge favour

was never going to oust Di Maria, Ronaldo or Ozil in the 3 attacking midfield positions. Not defensive or powerful enough to take Alonso or Khedria in the central two holding roles.

Bit of a strange purchase by Real in retrospect

Yeah I'd take him back.

We need extra quality players to push above the race for 4th each season.

Most of us would I suspect. I certainly would, despite never having been in love with him as much as many were. His quality and talent cannot be denied. We'd be much stronger with him.

He'd rather break both legs than rejoin us though I'd imagine.

I think he's chelsea bound myself, when RM unceremoniously elbow him aside. Yanited might take a punt but he'd wilt under the pressure there too, imo. No room for shrinking violets there. He could swan about happily in chelsea's team and pick up a phat wage and a few trophies easily enough.

Don't see where he fits in unless we sell or don't use one of Dembele and Holtby who have been and are two of our best players. That being said, I'd have him back in a heartbeat, one of the best players I've ever seen. Will never forget the Croatia Spain game where he beat the whole Spanish midfield by himself.

I'd take him back, if I could slap him first & he'd have to promise to never do it again & he'd have to beg for it.

But it would never be the same & I'd trade him for a younger model as soon as I could.

I would love him back pre-Holtby but we don't need him now. Still a class player though.

As much a any of us could hope to have him back at his previous ability, I doubt it would be worth the effort. He will never be forgiven by a large cohort of fans and any time he might play in a way construed as lazy, they would be all over him. And I'm not one to say they wouldn't be wrong. So move on. It's always a good rule of thumb (not perfect) to never go back.

I thought at the time that his purchase was an indication of a desire to alter playing system, to introduce a player who could fulfil the Xavi role and allow Real to take on Barca at their own game, but that never materialised.

We wouldn't be, because someone else would surely offer more than 16m for him if they wanted to flog him. I'd take him back in a heartbeat in the summer for 20m. Tidy 1 yr loan w/ a 12m loan fee

Agreed with your post but I thought he gave Madrid something they didn't ahve when he came on vs UTD. Nearly created something several times. I think he has overtaken Ozil as a player now tbh.
