I’m summer 2004 Chelsea signed Jose’s first choice striker, a big, powerful, athletic 24 year old Ivorian who had done the square root of fuck all most of his career, then out of nowhere scored at a rate of 1 in 2 in Ligue Un for two consecutive seasons, first for unfancied Guingamp, then for the far bigger Marseille. Chelsea fans had barely heard of him and knew little what to expect.

In summer 2020, Spurs are looking to sign Jose’s first choice striker, a big, powerful, athletic 25 year old Brazilian who had done the square root of fuck all most of his career, then out of nowhere scored at a rate of 1 in 2 in Primeira Liga for two consecutive seasons, first for unfancied Rio Ave, then for the far bigger Benfica. Spurs fans had barely heard of him and knew little what to expect, but somehow were able to roundly write him off as he’d not hit the heights of the SPL or Austrian Bundesliga.

Interesting parallels, but I do remember Drogba having a very high profile the summer Chelsea signed him.

Pretty sure Marseille either won the UEFA Cup or went very close in his last season there, with Drogba the break out star.

Didnt levy say Jose wants a certain type of striker and the there is not many of that type around? From what I see of all the names here Vinicius fits the previous Jose striker type. So Levy backs Jose and gets slated by Dave from the West Stand because he pays a fortune for his ticket and bagels ?‍♂️BTW the one thing Sugar did get right was that in the modern game gate receipts are almost irrelevant to modern game finances

I've only viewed the highlight youtube reels of Daka, Eduoard and Vinicius but unless I'm mistaken both Daka & Eduoard can be put in the 'raw (ish), pacey, can play other positions in front 3' , whereas this bloke is a big, physical Striker. End of. And Mourinho wants a big , physical striker. So making playing comparisons with the other two and valuing him against the other two is kind of pointless isn't it ? they aren't what the boss wants right now, so being quicker or cheaper or having more potential is irrelevant.

I'm talking about valuation. Not whether Daka is coming or not.
Sorry nedley, and I'm not being a dick here, but he doesn't have a valuation for a transfer (to us or anyone) if he's not the subject of a transfer. Unless it's what you're saying that's what the media perceive his market value of him to be?

Oh I certainly don’t want to suggest this guy is going to be a Drogba, that would be ludicrous having seen not one minute of him live. I only mean to say that the last few years of his career is very similar to Drogba’s at a similar point in his development. At the point Chelsea signed Drogba, he’d scored at a bit better than 1 in 2 across his first two Ligue 1 seasons, having previously only given poor returns across lower french leagues. This guy has also hit strong goal returns across 1.5 Primeira Liga seasons, having previously only had one 2nd tier season in Portugal (where he performed very well). Not every top striker is electric at 21/22 is my point really.

In fact, this guy has only played as a striker for 3 seasons, and even accounting for his poor 6 months as a Monaco substitute, has managed 46 goals in 92 league games across those three seasons.

Not sure whether that gives me confidence or fear, but like I said, it seems he’s on an upward trajectory, which means its time for Spurs to kill his career ?

Can't believe we're nailed on to sign the Jimenez/Drogba hybrid. The fact he does a similar celebration to Mbappe means there's probably a bit of him in there too.

So is heading, yet the best header of the ball is never top of list for a striker.
Tackling is a massively important aspect of a full back yet once again, it’s pace that people seem to pick wish list based on.
Crossing is a nice attribute for a wide player or ability to cut inside and accurately hit shots, once again pace will get picked.

Of course it’s important, I get it it’s exciting but I really don’t think there’s more “electric” elite players than ones with decent running ability etc. I just never would pick a player over another because they’re quicker. Fifa thing was just a guess, no ones opinion is right or wrong.

I get that, some of the best ever are not lightning, Messi for example is not particularly gifted athletically, he's all technique and magic while Ronaldo is the prototype atheltic/technical hybrid.

I don't even think this guy is a donkey anyway.

I do think when you look at the majority of top attackers around the majority have speed as a major asset. The two rising megastars Mbappe and Haaland are rapid. Ronaldo was too, as was Bale. Alphonso Davies caught everyone's imagination with it during their CL win. Its not everything, but almost every top team of recent years will have multiple speedy players across the pitch.

I think Height was actually the stat du jour on here on the full backs this year!

Really can’t be bothered to make anymore comments on here, it clear your not allowed an opinion, especially with dickheads like you around!

Of course you are petal.

Just don't take it to heart so much.

And give, whoever our new striker is, a chance. They are undoubtedly better than no-one at all.

He knocked Newcastle out of the UEFA Cup which raised his profile here greatly.

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Not gonna lie, i have no fucking clue who 99% of the people we are linked with are, even the premiership ones so i do not experience the highs and lows of others. If Mourinho approves then we cant really argue with it, and it is nice to see some pragmatism in the transfer market for a change.

One things for sure, if we got him and he was able to replicate what he did for Benfica last season he would indeed be a fantastic signing. Ticks all of Jose's boxes and would be a nightmare for defenders.

Worries will persist but if this guy is Jose's first choice then I'll be very happy if we manage to bring him in.

Personally think we should be going balls out for Edouard but I can definitely see the benefits a 6'3" brick shithouse with a decent finish on him could bring to the team.

While obviously not his most important attribute i like the fact he used to be a defender. It could lead to a lot of turnovers in the opposition half.
