I am seriously worried that we consider Benteke a "proven" top-class striker based on a decent season with Aston Villa.

Remind me how David Bentley, Roque Santa Cruz and Darren Bent are getting on?

This is key. At the end of the day, it's not our money. why sholud we worry about the fee. It's not our money. If DL pays it, hes convinced. If he doesn't, he doesn't think it's worth the risk or we cannot afford it.

What I don't understand about some fans on here and in general is that they were over the moon on Saturday, spending 17m on a midfielder who has never played in the PL before, yet are moaning that we may pay up to 25m on a young striker, who in my opinion has it all, scored for fun in the PL so has the experience. Pauline, who I am very happy with, surely provides a greater risk that Benteke with not having PL experience, no?

But he's an "inho" for God's sake! In fact, I might change my name to Davihno and see if it brings me success.

Selling Ade and keeping Defoe as backup is not very good news at all. If that's the case we need to sign two strikers.

I'm hoping as the summer goes on and Baldini settles into his new job, we might start to be linked to a few players, particularly strikers, who actually aren't established £25m players. Be nice if we could find someone decent who could do a job as well as a 'top' striking target.

With the world cup coming up I can see Defoe wanting regular football to increase his chances of making the England squad assuming they qualify. We might need a complete overhaul upfront. Ideally would prefer to keep Ade.

Ha ha, yes. I keep forgetting that :)

Don't get me wrong, I am ober the moon with Pauline, however, I think he carries a greater risk because he's not played in the PL. Whereas fans were not bothered that we shelled out 17m for him, a club record fee!

We've outgrown Defoe now so unless he's happy with coming off the bench for the last 20mins or a Carling/Europa League cup run then he should seek pastures new.

I sort of agree, because I love Ade, but, Defoe is the better impact sub. Thats if he's happy to play that role

If we kept Ade and sold Defoe instead we'd still need to sign two strikers. Without starting another Ade v Defoe debate I would imagine freeing up Ade's wages may be a factor, especially if Bale signs a fat new contract.

Agreed. If come September 2nd we only have 1 new striker + Defoe it'll be hugely disappointing.

Would be awful having Higuain and Defoe as our only 2 main strikers? I'd risk that if we could also get a wide forward of some type that could fill in.

...and Benteke is part of the Belgium National team, which is touted as one of the most up and coming teams in world football. Whats your point?

There is a big difference between paying 17 million for a Brazilian midfielder and paying 25 million for a Belgian striker who has had handful of games and one good season in the premiership. England were up and coming once, remember the golden generation? They didn't do shit and I don't think Belgium will either. The pressure of playing for Brazil, is completely different from playing for Belgium, the two don't compare really.

Defoe is no good for us, we need to move on.

[edit] sorry chris, just saw your post.

Why cant all the players we are linked with break down in tears like Paulinho and cry about how special it is for them to join us?

:(

We've had pretty much zero info about this from anywhere else. So I'll remain dubious. Fantastic if true though, because it would clearly signal our intent to bring in another striker.

Now I await the inevitable 'we've never spoken to the player, nor have we bid for him'

Selling a striker before you get one in first is a risky business, just remember Campbell.
