I wouldn't mind Troy Deeney from a personality point of view but it does have Rickie Lambert to Liverpool vibes.
Would be surprised if Levy wanted someone with Deeney’s personality at the club. He’s far too opinionated and vocal. When you consider Danny Rose’s propensity to be candid in his interviews about the club (which has contributed to the end of his Tottenham career I feel) I don’t think he’d want to bring Deeney in who’s 100x more talkative than Danny.

If Watford are that desperate we’d be looking at Sarr, not Deeney, surely? Saying that I’d take Deeney for free just for the first Europa League games. He’s a leader if nothing else.

We have a second striker??

No, playing someone out of position doesn't mean the count as a striker.

I'd rather play Zaha as a striker than any of the actual strikers we've been linked with.

If we can't sign a really decent back up striker, I'd rather we bought another wide player who can also play up front. Basically another Son. I don't think Lucas or Bergwijn can really do that. I find it ridiculous when I read people saying things like Wilson can also play out wide, as if he'd even be a modicum of use to us in that respect, given we've already got several players who are way better than him out wide.

If we can't get a decent striker, I'd much rather we bought someone who has shown he can play upfront in the Prem, but usually plays a different role, as long as he has sufficient quality to challenge for game time in that role.

I'm not really a massive Zaha fan and wouldn't normally want to sign him, given his age and that we've already got a good set of attacking wide players. But he can play as a striker and genuinely is good enough to challenge for a starting spot as an attacking mid and also is a fantastic option off the bench. I think he'd be a much better value buy, as though much more expensive, we'd actually get plenty of use out of him and with Kane and Son, we'd now have 3 players who can play as a striker. Cheap players aren't good value if you don't play them. I'm picking Son over Wilson or Deeney any day of the week. But if Kane was injured, I'd play Zaha and Son in the same team. If both Son and Kane are injured, I think we'd be much better with Zaha upfront than Wilson or Deeney.

Richarlidson would be the same sort of signing, but that's not possible. Zaha is available and there are even murmurs of a loan deal being possible. Zaha would make us much stronger than signing Deeney or Wilson etc.

If we had bought Shane Long instead of buying Vincent Janssen who knows where we may be now ...

Deeney would be a fine addition to the squad but my concern is his age and fitness. There’s no point having a backup striker with a dodgy knee. If Kane ends up injured there need to be a player who can fill that spot.

I reckon Bats at Chelski could be that option

I would normally be against us signing someone like Deeney but just think under Mourinho he could be a decent option.

That's not a bad shout at all. He's not great, but better than the crap we've been linked with recently.

He really is quite bad these days - also a player that needs to be starting every week otherwise he's well off the pace.

Consider this for a minute.

We sign someone like Zaha/Wilson/Sarr who are fairly young and would expect wages of £100k+ and they do fairly well for us, certainly well enough to justify the outlay and enough to stay beyond one season.

Troy Parrott absolutely smashes it at Millwall, scores 15+ goals and looks ready for the PL. However, he also sees that if he returns to spurs he now has the task of competing with Kane and Zaha/Wilson/Sarr for first team football. He then sees his future elsewhere.

OR. We sign Deeney for a season then welcome Parrott back as Kane’s established understudy and wish Deeney well for the future.

If it takes having someone like Deeney for one season to allow Parrott to develop as a footballer, it’s absolutely worth it.

I would still like to see us take a run at Ollie Watkins if Brentford don't get promoted.

The two links so far seem to be where we're at though when it comes to backing up Kane though.

I'm not a great fan, but compared to Deeney? Deeney is a regular starter as a striker, yet only scored 5 goals (pens aren't a reason to sign a player) from open play all season. I just don't see how you can be such a limited goal threat and be an option for a CL chasing club. It amazes the low quality our fans are prepared to accept from a 2nd choice striker.

More realistically, if Parrott does make the grade, it will be in 3 or 4 years time. He's only 18.

Yeah and he’s way down the pecking order at Chelsea at the moment. A loan would be a good deal but are they interested in selling/loaning us?

I can't imagine they'd be mad keen on doing us any favours! In fact if they do agree to a deal, it's probably a bit of a red flag.
