The Goat did also say 'never say never'. Deadline day always has a twist in it somewhere. Reckon the MS deal will be back on at various points on Monday.

It's the goat. Pinch of salt like any ITK.

It MAY be true, but it may still just be tactics - a pissing contest. The window isn't over yet. We may just be arguing over AT's price. Standard stuff, you'd think.

The fat Levy hasn't sung yet.

Not a chance. We're about to sign his alternative and Southampton's MS replacement has gone back

We identified Schneiderlin and Mussachio as two keys players. Yet failed to land both. Quite disappointing really. I just hope Poch gave Levy the go ahead to sign Stambouli, otherwise it's another situation where we're forcing players on the manager.

27m for Schneiderlin and 17m+ for Musachio that's a double deal getting close to £50m as we don't even know what Villareal wanted because they weren't accepting 17m. I think we would all love them both but we are never going to spend £50m on two players. I think Poch is a smart man and knows what club he is at. I don't want players forced on him either but I don't think he will be throwing the toys out like AVB

You'll find out for sure on Sunday if he's in the team again. If he doesn't make the squad again, we've pretty much fucked up.

We have a squad of 25. Not all of them will get in the matchday squad every week. He's played in a in over half our games this season, which suggests he is part of his plans.

There'll be a story to bump up ratings/views/whatever. Anything can happen on deadline day. We'll just have to wait and see what it has in store for us this time.

If he can't make a match day squad over Chadli, Lennon, etc then there is an issue.

Since he's supposedly a makeweight for MS, who would be a starter, we'd be looking at keeping him as 2nd/3rd choice over another 1st choice player. Which is silly.

Got to say, despite being a bit worried that MS would hinder the development of Bentaleb, I am also amazed we wouldn't be happy to offload a peripheral player who's unlikely to start much and who isn't the best worker off the ball as a rule (and has an issue listening to a manager's instructions) and so might not be a great fit for Pochettino's system.

Stambouli and now this. Weird night.

Totally agree.

And Townsend probably is the worst fit out of the lot. I find that ITK staggering in truth and it makes me think that Poch hasn't had much say in it. Didn't start him against West Ham, left him out completely against QPR and he had a shocker out in Cyprus and frustrated in pre season and there's been very little to suggest he's going to adapt his game and play with more maturity and intelligence.

We have Southampton who seem desperate to get him even though we hold such a strong interest in MS.

I just have a nagging feeling that Levy and co think Townsend, and his brief England hype/success, believe he's destined for the top - and don't believe now is a time to sell as his stock could be higher in the near future.

I wouldn't be confident about that at all but that's what I suspect has scuppered this.

I don't think we did. It's probably more the fact that our valuations didn't match up.

Townsend was terrible last night and definitely not good enough for a Top 5/6 club looking to improve. Maybe Poch thinks there is something for him to work with, but I can't see it...

We spent a lot of money on Bentley, Bent etc and took a big hit on them. Not saying MS would flop as I really rate him but I can see why DL and the committee looked at other options with better financial perks when the value of MS and MM exceeded what we believe they are worth.

It depends really. Talk was of Southampton wanting £27m for MS (and judging by the fees they got for others I'm not surprised). They seemed to rate Townsend around £8m (if he was their player he'd be at least £15m!). A fair swap would have been Andros plus maybe £5m. Doubt that was Southampton's deal though.

Andros+8mil would be a good deal for them - the guy can't stand them anymore and doesn't want to be there and will stink up the dressing room at a time when they are trying to build something new, practically from scratch.

Yup, quite a bit. The league still produces some excellent players but overall it remains pretty naff. Seen so many appalling games; even from the likes of PSG! Can't remember the name of the old fella in midfield for Monaco but he was still more impressive than Moutinho - who I expected to achieve far more in his career than he has.
