I came down from college in Sheffield. I got there about 4:00 and the line for the Park Lane Terraces was round to the Main gates on the High Road. They opened the gates at 6:00 I think and the line was moving smoothly until I was about half way down Park Lane from the terrace turnstiles . Then everyone behind panicked they wouldn’t get in and surged forward. Park Lane road was a sea of people. I got swept past the terrace turnstiles and was in the middle of the road opposite the turnstiles for the upper Stand. I forced my way to them and went into through the Stand turnstile. I went down to the terraces and asked the guy to let me in there. He thought I was mad but I told him there was no way I was going to be able to sit for this game.Got to WHL about 4.30 on a very hot stuffy night and eventually got in through the schoolboys entrance, such a crush that night- the memory of horses and the pungent aroma of their shit. It was all very well ordered though.
Sid Wale and the board would have taken a bumper cash take on the gate that night.
There was way more than the official attendance for sure.
I was right behind the goal and if there had been no net the winning goal would have hit me in the face. As it was it was like a slap in the face. Bad journey back to Sheffield. My room mate was a Leeds fan so he was not happy as a draw would have seen Leeds Champions.
