Disagree, in fact there is a massive difference in whether Eriksen and Sissoko make up part of a 3 in midfield or they push up as part of a three off Kane. If it's the former, then we should enjoy loads of possession but have to be patient and wear them down, if it's the latter than we immediately then we might see less of the ball but have more space in behind them when we do get it.

I personally hope it's the former, because if it's the latter then Son would have been a better bet than Sissoko for that type of role.

Don't we tend to be fluid - so both formations will be used at various points in the match?

Why did Dembele play against Barnsley? Absolute madness. Probably the most bizarre decision Pochettino has ever made.

Its not THAT rigid you know. Apart from the obvious back 3, the 2 wingbacks and Kane up top, the midfielders interchange amongst themselves and adapt to various formations of the core formation many many times during the match. So u can call it 3421, 3331, 3511 or 3241, it is still the same core formation of 3 at the back which adapts itself throughout the match. Its not THAT rigid like you think.

How is it going to look:

Lloris
Alderweireld Sanchez Vertonghen
Aurier ________ Dier ________ Davies
Sissoko Alli Eriksen
Kane

or

Kane
Alli
Eriksen Sissoko
Davies ________ Dier ________ Aurier
Vertonghen Sanchez Alderweireld
Lloris
I hope it's the first variant. Kane was once a goalkeeper. Didn't work out.

usually I'd agree with both of you but this season, bar Everton away perhaps, I think we have been pretty rigid in our formation. Maybe it's just the players working their way to fluidity and form, but there hasn't been the unpredictability and zip that we had in the second half of last season.

We always seem to have key players out. Rose, Dembele, Wanyama, Lamela would all arguably be starting. I love if it the other items contenders regularly had 4/5 starters out every game. This is why we needed another midfielder.

Missing out on Barkley has hit us hard so far. Wonder how many of those dropped points so far might have been worth spending an extra £5 million on?

It would have made no difference, Barkley is injured?
I agree we need him and hope we get him in Jan but he would have made no difference to our start

Great. Dembele injured his ankle against Barnsley and might be back in a few weeks.

Barkley is still injured with a hammy tear, so signing him would have made no difference to our season so far.

Delicate balancing act with all the games coming up. Sissoko will add strength to match Wet Spam in the middle and the bench looks strong. Trust Poch.

Last season we were fluid and dominated pretty much everyone. This season we’ve yet to regain any fluidity partially due to injuries and bizarre line ups. If it ain’t broken don’t try and fix it.

Based on current availability the back 5 are our strongest available and it’s questionable whether Rose will displace Davies any time soon. We’ve the same front 3 with Son readily available. However, in central midfield Dier lacks the pure physical dominance of Wanyama whom is sorely missed. Sissoko Jesus Christ and yes he’s been ‘reasonable’ recently, doesn’t possess anywhere near the attributes of either Dembele or Winks.

Therefore an area that is vital to our play is currently non functional and it’s showed in our poor displays against Burnley and Swansea. Playing Son and dropping Eriksen deeper adds balance and fluidity whereas playing both Dier and Sissoko centrally is like trying to put square pegs in round holes, it just doesn’t work. We’re then left with looking to win games in the second half by utilising our bench but as it showed against Swansea of all people it doesn’t always work. We need to set up to win games from the off and not in the last 20-30 mins.
