How well do you know Uruguay's players though? Apart from the obvious ones I doubt too many people know how good Uruguay's midfield and defence are.
Fair point
Im talking from my albeit limited knowledge.

However look at their recent call ups in defence and midfield and tell me how many of those you recognise as house hold names?

Not many players slip the net of every major club... If they're of a similar quality of our projected squad for the WC then they would be turning out a more prestigious level by now, at least more than a couple of them.

Just a question for people who have been on this site longer than me:
Is there normally a new "World Cup" section on SC when it comes around every 4 years?

France get easiest group after a convenient change of rules.

The level of corruption makes me sick.

Why has this gone unchallenged by every country's FA?!

Also I struggle I see us making it out of the group stages, Uruguay and Costa Rica will be used to climate and have a lot of support.

On paper we're the best team IMO.

I just hope Hodgson shakes things up and plays people like Barkley in midfield.

Japan will win Group C, which is the weakest overall.

I'd have to politely disagree. For al the hype for which much is premature, I still believe if the appropriate personnel were selected, we would have individually the best XI in the group, very tight with Italy but far superior to Uruguay.

I just don't trust Hodgson to make the right selections though.

Sorry EY, but Ipolitely disagree myself. :p

Italy are the best team in that group and have a stronger team overall. Uruguay have a few fantastic players, but a few average ones too. I have a weird feeling that Uruguay will top the group with Italy second.

Just to provide others a little insight into what the opposition are saying. In Italy the main talk is about Uruguay being a dark horse. England aren't seen as much of a threat due to what is seen as a very poor defence and strikeforce, and a lack of technical ability.

Yes there is. It becomes a good section throughout the world cup. Also it moves everyone away from the ITK section, which is no bad thing for some of you!!

A typical England performance at the WC would be to win the group and then get knocked out in the next round to Iran...

Really pleased we're playing Uruguay. Ever since I was a kid watching Football Italia on channel 4 I've followed the International team. Players like Sosa and Fonseca were fantastic, and got me hooked. Sort of been my second International team really.

The defenders aren't particularly good, but the midfield and attack are more than a match for England. Even if Forlan is getting on a bit (which pains me to say, seeing as he's a whopping two days younger than me) he'll be a threat, and Suarez and Cavani are up there with the best attacks in the tournament.

They're a battling, pretty well organised team. Playing in South America they will lift their game to another level.

Oh. My. God. You old fuck, you! :p

Seriously though, Uruguay are a real threat. Defensively they still have some quality. Muslera is a very good keeper and Caceres, Maxi Pereira and Godin are good defenders.

Rough draw for England, in serious danger of not getting out of the group - the heat and humidity of their location might be the final nail in the coffin

Having done the respective tournaments in Portugal in 2004, Germany in 2006, South Africa in 2010 and Ukraine in 2012, I am keen to make it over next year, even if the football was the worst part of each of those trips.

Time will tell whether it's doable.

And we usually have a decent prediction contest too. First Goalscorer, correct scores, both HT and FT etc etc

That's if I can get a minion, erm volunteer, to do it this year.......

Why does South America have 6 teams out of 10 in their confederation completing while Europe have only 13 out of something like 50 plus nations?

Surely if Brazil is going to qualify as host...then there should only be 3 automatic qualifying places .

Wow, Rubén Sosa! Those white tape around his Socks and that deadly left foot.

C4 serie A in the 90s, couldn't beat it. Saturday morning catch up with Jimbo and often featuring Gazza. Memories!

Don't know why everyone is scared of Uruguay. They were very pedestrian in the Confederations Cup and barely qualified for the WC out of South America. In fact, if Brazil did not get the auto spot this year, they probably would not have qualified. Heck, Ecuador finished ahead of them and nobody is giving Ecuador and chance in hell to get out of their group.

Suarez, Cavani, and Forlan have struggled to play together. I say England gets out of the group.

Great draw, really look forward too it. I'd like to think that this "group of death" will inspire England rather than watching them lumber around against minnows.

Group of death? Please, B and G are much tougher.

My favourite was Enzo Francescoli

Yeah group G and B are tougher groups then England. Seriously, true champions need to go through the fire to come out on top.

Juz wondering... If France doesn't make it out of their group, Deschamps gonna be sack...
Ecuador recently drew with Argentina, in Argentina (fine without messi but still was a strong team). It ain't gonna be a walk in the park.
