A fading star maybe, but can we stop retailing the wanted leave nonsense. VdV has been clear that the only reason he listened to the offer from Hamburg was because AVB at the outset had made him feel unwanted.

where did you read this?

Quite. ignoring the ridiculous defensive record we have. It's a concern for sure. It's obvious we need to start scoring more than just one goal a game to give ourselves a bit of breathing room in games themselves and in general terms wrt GD etc. However, only conceding goals in 3 league games so far means we're not being lucky. A finer margin anyone at the club would like no doubt but there's a reason we're in 4th and there's no doubt lots of hard work will be being done to correct and improve our scoring record.
I think it is the same reason why Liverpool are third and Southampton are fifth, it is still very early in the season.
I've wanted us to be the kind of team that can hold onto a 1-0 lead for years though. Exciting football plus top four is a tall order. The first season AVB did not get the players he asked for to replace the quality players that left. This season he has a whole bunch of quality players that have to be integrated very quickly.
At the moment results matter, I will take the boring play and top four rather than exciting football and no top four.
Obviously it would be nice to have exciting play with tons of goals with top four but sometimes you can't have anything.

Had to laugh when I saw this thread. When Madrid come knocking in the summer after we have our best season for years, it will be the same fans slating him now who will be crying when he wishes us well for the future.

Yes, you need to keep faith but with the right man.

I won't be calling for AVB's head for a couple of years so long as we stay top half of the table. In practice I expect we shall do much better than that, and I expect AVB to become a better coach over time, so it is likely he will be worth sticking with.

But he is very much a work in progress and our progress will depend on his, perhaps more than on any signing we might make, because I think AVB at the moment AVB is contributing to making our players look average.

The only people left not to have their own negative thread.

Thanks Eddie, though his actual quote shows AVB did nothing wrong :)

"With Villas Boas I had a false start. While with HSV I just felt as though she really needed me... It was a club in need. And I wanted to help.

"During our first conversation (with AVB) he hinted that I had to fight for my place. That in itself is not a problem. I have enough confidence in my abilities. But until that time I was 'the guy' at The Spurs. The contrast with the way Villas-Boas saw it, it was just too big. The club had just bought Sigurdsson who had an advantage, the coach said himself.

"In the same period HSV knocked at the door again. Villas Boas came around shortly afterwards and changed his opinion of me, apparently it was not so smooth with Sigurdsson, but then I had already made my choice. About the club I have no evil words, the atmosphere was great, we had a good team, there is a club being built."

I have bolded a different section:

Not necessarily wrong but a bit hasty and not showing great man-management skills.

But my point was that I don't buy that VDV's departure was inevitable.

exciting football and top 4 are just so incompatible.
We are up against Man U, City, Chelsea and Arsenal for a club of our resources to knock one of those out of the top four is a tall order when we've only qualifed for the CL once ourselves.
It may be compatible if AVB is given time by the supporters and the board to bed in a load of new players and get them playing the way he wants.
There are some legitimate criticisms and concerns but we are a side that is hard to beat, hard to score against and get results when we are not playing at our best, those are some of the qualities you need to win trophies. So I believe we are going in the right direction.
