It's a special anniversary for the club today. On this day in 1963, we became the first British team to win a European trophy. It was the Cup Winners Cup against Atletico Madrid where Spurs won 5-1 at Feyenoord Stadium, Rotterdam.

The performance in the final is regarded as one of the club’s finest. Goalscorers in the final were Jimmy Greaves (2), John White and Terry Dyson (2). Here's Jimmy holding the trophy aloft on the victory parade.

It might be 50 years ago but Cliff Jones remembers the final as if it was yesterday. Read our interview with Cliff --> http://bit.ly/100dLww

And it's a date that could be potentially marred by chelscum being the first English team to win all 3 European trophies tonight. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Good post, and it cannot be marred, we were the first to win any silverware in Europe. We set the standards

Chelsea are irrelevant - even if they beat Benfica and set a new (different) record it doesn't erase the fact we were the first ever team to win a European cup competition and its something we as a club should still acknowledge and celebrate

Before my time but an important part of our clubs heritage and no doubt a glorious day in the memories of my dad and granddad- the same for most of you and yours

My dad was in Rotterdam that night 50 years ago. I took him along to WHL yesterday and we went on the Legends Tour with the 1 and only Terry Dyson, MOTM in that historic cup victory and the only Spurs player to score a hat trick v the scum

Quality afternoon, Dyson was on good form. I got to sit in the Directors Box, AVB’s press conference and dugout seats, went into the Bill Nich suite, popped into the dressing rooms and walked out onto the pitch through the tunnel

Finished off with a pic with the Cup Winners Cup & Q&A session with Terry

If I can figure out how to upload pics I'll try and post a few!

I was there.

Lost my passport and air ticket in Rotterdam but still managed to get home.

How about Dukla Prague away? My dad said there was only 92 of them and they were all on the same plane!!

Apparently they lost 1-0 and my dad went up to Billy Nichs hotel room to say hello and although it was a very good result over their Nicholson was still very disappointed that they’d been beaten

Stories like this show the importance of being in the Europa league still

It might not be the CL but its still a long way from where we were in the 90s and 2000s dreaming of Uefa - now we take it for granted

There's still a magic about playing in Europe, I've only been to one European away game but its a special thing and 20-30 years from now people will tell stories to their kids and grand kids about the night they were in Lyon when Dembele scored in the last min etc

Hopefully next year if we're in the Europa will be a bit stronger and a bit more settled and have a real shot at winning it

I was at Benfica.

Had a banner that I paraded around the ground. It was written in Spanish cos I couldn't do Portuguese ! Similar though.

"Spurs ganara la copa de Europa". Union Jack on reverse side. St George flag not used by football fans in those days.

I was 8 when the game was played. My mum was in hospital having my younger sister and I was staying with relatives. My uncle said I could watch the game that night on telly but he had to go out to work. My bloody aunt made me go to bed and miss it  I sat upstairs at the door listening to what was going on downstairs......he later divorced her...I am not surprised!

It wasn't the CL equivalent that we won in
Rotterdam either.

What do you mean? I didn't say it was did I? (I'm aware we've never won the European cup)

All good .. I was concurring with you.

Btw. Should have won the European Cup in the early sixties. Best team in Europe and therefore the World probably.

I remember watching a video about our double winning team and the European cup run the season after on the coach to Elland Road for the FA cup semi final with Everton

Such a dominant team - shame we didn't turn it into a sustained period of success like Liverpool or Man U have in recent years

Couple of things.

Had we not blown the league in 59/60 at Easter we would have been in the European Cup in 60/61 when we were at our imperious best.

Secondly, the loss of Dave Mackay with a twice broken leg had a significant effect on our chances of a sustained period of success.

+ the loss of White & the age of Blanchflower

By the sounds of it we were robbed v Benfica in the European Cup semi final 2nd leg at WHL. The winners of the tie would undoubtedly go on to lift the trophy

Robbed in both legs. I was at both.

Some decidedly dodgy stuff went on.
