I mentioned I saw some rumors about Arda Turan and him having "interest from the Premier League" and I mentioned why I thought we might be a fit.

But, credit to TheAmerican as he provided me with a link to open a thread to discuss him. Anyway, here's the link:

Arda Turan is the agenda that do not transfer to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in the circuit for the Brits.

Anyways, what I alluded to in the ITK Thread...

- Interest from the EPL: I mentioned I felt that United have "bigger fish to fry," City look to be settled with their squad, Arsenal appear to want a CM/Striker, Chelsea have no need for a player like Turan anymore as they bought Schurrle and Liverpool look to be closing in on Willian.

- We had ITK in the past about looking to players with release clauses. Turan has one at 24m Euros.

As for Turan as a player:

- Good, not great pace. But, he makes up for his not great pace with very very good close control. If you watch him, at times it looks like he's even trying but the ball just sticks to his feet.

- He's got an eye for the pass. He can play the ball all over the pitch and he sees the pitch incredibly well for a guy who played primarily on the wings for Atletico Madrid. He's got that ability to switch play with ease, he can play dangerous passes with both feet and he's adept at driving in to the heart of defense and picking up others with incisive passes as they make runs off of him.

- He's not a great goal scorer. In 32 matches last year (about 2,200 minutes) he scored 5 goals and assisted 6. While you may look at that and think "meh, wide forward in a 4-3-3, not good enough." At face value, you would have a point. But for Atletico last year, they often ran a 4-2-2-2 where he would play as the LAM and his role was more of a guy that would put Falcao/Costa in better positions to score with his runs and ability to draw defenders off of the aforementioned duo. He's the type of player that can play the pass before the assist, he can deliver quality crosses and I believe he'd be a great fit on the left with a striker like Soldado because his ability to play with both feet and send in near post crosses.

- His work rate is awesome. I've touted Ruben Garcia around here all summer and Turan won my heart in a similar way that Garcia did. Both are fantastic going forward, but their desire to chip in in defense is spectacular. Turan is quick to get back and help out and he's actually an aggressive defender (had 7 yellows last year).

Summary: I really do like Arda Turan and I think he's a great player. I've given you a few reasons why if we do decide to go for him he'd be a smart purchase. My only issue with a transfer for Turan is that at his age (26) you're looking at a finished product. Now, is that enough to warrant a 24m Euros asking price? It might be when you look at our side and see that we do need some creativity in it. Having Turan would give us a creative hub from the wing and it would allow us to get by with a more enforcing midfield and not have to rely so much on a guy like Siggy to function as our sole creator.

I agree Snarf, it's his work rate that can really win you over with him.

Seems a lot like the wing version of Dembele.

Might say more of a Moutinho just because of his passing ability and his tendency to show up all over the pitch.

Plays almost like a defensive winger, and is very skillful on the ball. Is powerful and creative, but doesn't produce many statistics. He just does the dirty work.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I was just looking at his dribbling and aggression with taking on players by using it and some power. I think Turan is directly inbetween Dembele and Moutinho as far as passing ability goes.

Love this player. Just not sure he's as a good a fit as some of the others mentioned but I do love his dribbling and creativity

Ive watched him over the years from gala to where he is now.

Absolutely quality player that has excellent ball control and vision.

BUT

I would prefer willian or lamela over him.

Simply because they possess one thing that arda unfortunately hasnt .... Pace, which you would need in the premierleague.

But if his release is £20m, our choice will be Willian or Turan plus £10-15m - enough for a player like Eriksen or a good chunk of Lamela's fee.

You are Dan Ashcroft and I claim my five pounds :watching:

Haven't seen him since Galatasaray when Dos Santos was there on loan... a fun team with lots of dragonfly-quick development, which he was a big part of... something that we've looked to want to improve on... but you'd have to think we're already too investment-heavy injury-worry-wise to really fancy him.

Thanks, snarf, it's great to read that he got to keep his game. Sad hearing thus far it's been in spite of such rotten injury luck. He was out for a stretch that season too, which I think then must have been the start of that five-year-run mentioned in the post beneath yours... heh, and I so wanted us to sign him back then! :couchpotato:

Very interesting review. Thank you, Snarf.
I must admit, I didn't know much about Turan, but you've almost instantly won me over with your depiction of his skills/abilities.
Cheers!

PS. You seem to be very knowledgeable in regards to various footballers. Curious, is that derived from neutral observations, watching matches, research, or..? Either way I'm impressed.

He chose ath Madrid over the bindipers. Smart bloke! Would love to see Turan at the lane. Technically as good as Dembele on the ball but works harder off the ball.

Good player but not worth the price being mentioned IMO. I would prefer Ericksen who is younger and a lot cheaper.

One of the few players out of cimbom that I rate. I ain't biased or anything but blue and yellow is a far better colour for Istanbul. :D
