and why exactly would we share with Bale's agents our plans for other targets if Bale is not going to be on the team?

Yeah, it's a bit ass backwards.

Levy to Barnett: Hey, we're going to sell Bale to Madrid. But guess what? Lamela's done and we're going after target A, B and C. Keep it on the hush-hush, though. I'm sure I don't even have to tell you that, you're a stand-up guy!

Looks like a pretty good player. Two questions though, what makes us think a) Atletico would even consider, and b) why would he want to come to us over the project they're building? A bid certainly doesn't hurt here, just don't see it being likely.

a) already been answered but he has a release clause.

b) we might pay more - especially since, even after the sale of Falcao, Atletico are supposed to be still massively in debt. Their "project", therefore, doesn't have much momentum - unlike ours.

Apparently Athletico held none of Falcao's economic rights.

From the contents of this thread my opinion is likely going to be unpopular so please forgive me in advance...but I am shocked there is such a positive perception of him here. He is quite a polarizing figure amongst Turkish fans and those that have followed his career. Undoubtedly he was the hot ticket item and the prodigy of Turkish football 3-4 years ago....but from that perception to actually delivering is quite a contrast.

People back 'home' have seriously questioned his development as a footballer, so much so as to question if he was going to return to Turkey fairly soon. Without getting into the politics of Turkish football and who says what about him, it is fair to ask as a football fan how may his skill set adapt to the premier league. There may be varying opinions on this, but his lack of pace is one of his brutal weaknesses. He has been a life long fan of Liverpool so there has been ample discussion on whether he would ever be able to cut it with his style of play in England. Alas there have been serious questions whether he would be able to compete playing on the wing in any of the top sides in England....perhaps he evolves in the middle somehow...but the wing is a huge question mark. I think there are many that would say at this point and time in his career that he would not succeed in any of the top leagues outside of Spain and Italy.

Again just passing on my two cents, it seems there are fans of him here, which is fine. Just wanted to pass on a contrasting point of view regarding him.

I try to catch the odd Ath Madrid game now and then cause they play a nice brand of football and Turan is a big part of that. He was immense against Rayo this weekend.

A quick glance a RAWK recently introduced me to this fella. Liverpool have been following him all summer

I've been quite surprised his name hasn't been mentioned on here much before this

GET YOUR OWN SCOUTS

Personally I don't think he is horrible...but I always hear the comparison to Maxi Rodriguez. Which considering the previous Atletico ties and future Liverpool stay may seem convenient....but regardless seem to fit. I know Arda has wanted to play in England for a while but he really (and this is also IMHO) seems like a poor fit. Regardless there is a strong consensuses at least publicly for a while now that he won't leave Spain unless it's for Liverpool...though you can never say in the world of football dealings. I would let them have him up north.

We wouldn't necessarily need to. IF Bale or his agent have been informed that Bale will be going nowhere until Lamela is secured, it wouldn;t take much for Bale's agent to be able to work out that a deal has been made, ie Bale possibly being told he can leave now?

They don't have a project. None of these clubs in Spain on the periphery do. They're all in debt so when they nurture these decent young players and sell them for big fees. It's about maintaining where they are. The sales thwart their progress.

I'd love for that to be true but it's such a BS account :(

The one thing that makes me think this guy Is a real possibility is his release clause being 20 mil and I remember an ITK mentioned earlier in the summer that if Bale where to go, which he clearly will, we will focus primarily on players with realise clauses. AT has a low enough RC and is skilled enough to match our criteria I would have thaught.

First off, thank you for your constructive post, and for conveying some of your basic thoughts/views on the player.
I personally don't think it's too far-fetched to expect Arda Turan to succeed in the EPL, and although I do agree he is better equipped to play centrally, I believe he can still make it on the wings (perhaps not as effectively as a more conventional #10, but still).
In regards to his pace (or lack thereof), it is frequently brought up as a supposed issue, but I tend to think it's not that big of a deal for EPL these days.
Playmakers of his ilk can integrate their skills/abilities into the English game much easier nowadays, imho.
For instance, Juan Mata's lack of explosive pace was often described as an alleged weakness, but he has been nothing short of brilliant at the top of BPL (arguably one of the top 5 players in the league last 2 seasons).
I am not naive enough to say Arda will replicate the type of success Mata is having in England, but he definitely possesses a rare mix of vision, creative acumen, superb ball control, & excellent dribbling ability to boot.
In fact, if it wasn't for injury concerns, it would be a no-brainer for me personally.

Cheers

How accurate is that amount though? I've read mixed reports, and that Daily Star link I posted earlier (perhaps in a different thread though) has yet another amount listed for his release clause (that one was ridiculous btw, something like £29 mil I think).
If that's close to the actual amount, it'd be difficult to justify that kind of spending, imo.
What do you guys think would be the limit (pertaining to his RC)? As in, where would we draw the line before moving on to another player?
