Why do people go to be entertained if they think that we're not very entertaining? I don't get it.

I think it would be interesting to see if the supporters at the next home game can have a bit of a go at ourselves. "We only sing when we're shit" kinda thing.

They didn't only stop us from playing, they dominated large periods of the first half and created more chances than we did, so don't portray the game to have been a backs to the wall job for Hull where we just couldn't find the breakthrough. We won a game we didn't deserve to win with a penalty which had we been on the other end of, we'd be moaning our arses off.

As for the atmosphere today, I genuinely don't think it was THAT bad. It wasn't good, but wasn't way below the norm at WHL these days. It's been much worse than that. We were hardly going to come out singing our arses off given our last home game was a 3-0 thrashing by those spamming ****s. If anything the burden of response was on the team, not us.

The thing is its not just about today I'd imagine, its been like this for ages....its a culmination, I'm sure AVB has been acutely aware of the problem for quite sometime and finally has decided to take a chance in saying something.

Moaning about winning, Jesus wept, I remember seeing Ronnie Rosental missed an open goal from two yards against Sheff Utd in a relegation battle...

It's a mix of the slow possession football that *some* fans don't like and anxiousness amongst the crowd.

Remember when Stoke got promoted? Their ground was bouncing every game, making it difficult for the opposition no matter who they played and despite being amongst the favorites for relegation, while playing *rugby* football.

It's amazing how expectations can change atmospheres at different grounds around the country.

You don't know what youve got til it's gone... When AVB fucks off to Real/PSG/Juve etc you'll see.

I've got a feeling they won't be interested in him after this season. Hope I'm wrong (and that we have a great season...not that I'm hoping AVB leaves).

Your opinion is no more valid than anyone else and just because you go to games doesn't change that.

Just because you have invested more in a financial sense to supporting the club doesn't mean you have invested more emotionally than a fan that watches from a distance.

All fans have a right to be critical of the club/players/manager but doing so at the ground during a match whilst the team are attempting to win football matches seem to be the most asinine form of support I have ever heard of.

The only thing a toxic atmosphere at WHL will do is promote the type of performances we have seen at home sporadically over the last 4 or 5 years.
Won't debate the validity argument with you but I disagree but what I will say is that the atmosphere today was no worse than many many other games recently so surprising he chooses now to come out with this on the back of a squeaky win .... maybe he is feeling the pressure

Why wouldnt we come out singing, if we are supporters we support the team. Not just because we are winning but because we love the club. And By the sounds of it he wasnt just talking about the atmosphere today but in general, and with that I agree.

Summed up that you don't get it in your first line!

Going to the game doesn't make you an amazing fan, it doesn't even make you a fan, it just means you have deeper pockets than others and you're probably right, half the people at the lane are really, really old (my Dad amongst them) and have been going for more than 30 years but whats the point in being there if you're just going to get on the players backs?

We all want the same outcome, a Spurs win but it's through vociferous positivity that we will see the performances that we dream off, not making the players frightened of failure.

Our support for the team must be unconditional just like it is at the 1882
Ok I've been reading through the thread & others & I take back my disagreement with your points, you're right, I was kind of thinking about it from a convoluted angle.

There's no doubt the atmosphere is deteriorating & that's probably in large part due to fewer youngsters coming, probably due to cost amongst other things.

So you're probably dead right, exactly what's needed is 1882 & it's like to attract younger, more energetic support

I think he's got to the point where he has got his feet under the table enough to feel safe saying what needed to be said about the atmosphere at WHL.

I agree the atmosphere in general isn't great. Maybe if they let the N17 project do their thing we'd improve all round. But no, there's too much money to be gained. The Club are just as culpable as the fans. Most people in WHL are 50+ loyal supporters that have been going for 20 odd years. They're great at buying their kids the replica kit, but hardly going to raise the roof in singing. Part of the problem.

The thing is it doesn't matter. It's not really about AVB or the brand of football we play under him. Whatever it is at the time the shit fan element would change their whinge to be about something else. I think they just enjoy being moaning gits.

There's a problem at the lane and it needs addressing, certainly before / when we update the stadium.

I can see both sides.

Support was much better in the 90's when we were shit. However, we were shit, bar one or two superstars, so being shit was expected. With a team like we have now, we should certainly be playing better, more fluid football.

It's hard to get excited and sing when you're watching constant sideways and backwards passing. And it's all so slow in its build up. That's what pains me more than anything else, it's sooooo sloooooow.

On the other hand, we have no right to expect a win and a good set of supporters will sing up no matter what the circumstances. We're top 4 and very difficult to beat. We're no longer a soft touch. Lots of 'experts' see us as challengers. We're quite a big deal. And AVB is a big part of that. He obviously believes that we're not doing our part as fans at home and looking at our league position etc, you can understand why he's angry.

I think he should've worded his attack slightly differently. It's come out very harsh and will give opposing fans lots of material when they visit the Lane. 'Doing it alone' and 'no support' aren't the best things to say to your own fans, even if he's right.

I don't think that people are necessarily expecting a win - more that it seems required. If we don't win then it'll be a disaster.

People are talking about negativity but what comes first is the fidgety unease, the pressure of needing to win whilst watching the minutes tick by and the football grow turgid and frustrating. A lot of the negativity is a response to this.

Obviously it's better for the fans in the stadium and sing and support (whilst those at home bite their nails and curse) but I can't really criticize them for letting the nerves get to them. It's part and parcel of being a top club, I guess.

Won't last for long?

Won't last for long the way we are playing.

Didn't AVB take us to 4th last season?

No he didn't, or did you miss that we are playing thursdays instead of tuesdays/wednesdays this season.

With our highest points total in the Prem ever?

Reason for that can be found on the table, it was most uneven PL since god knows when and hence we got highest tally despite finishing higher on the final table on 2/3 previous seasons. Mind you, I'm more interested in finishing position than actual point tally, I'd rather win PL with 74 points than finish 5th with 75. Some might also say that it was Bale that got us there last season.

And we're 4th now? With our best start to a Prem season ever?

And you still want to say that's all about luck?

Really?

No I mean it...

Really?

Yeah, really. Have you actually watched our games this season, really?

Bollocks.
Edit - your opinion vs mine, no offence meant, but I would rather the 33,000 lucky so and so's out of our huge fan base that can actually affect the team SUPPORT them when it is needed, for example when we are struggling against a team like Hull.

What's lucky about paying £81 to watch us lose 3-0 to West Ham (as I did a few weeks back)?
