I understand where you're coming from, but I would argue that if Kane is leaving, then it's even more important to bring in an experienced head like Laporte.
Understand where your coming from too.

Though, maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I feel if Kane goes that we won’t be competing for a few years, experienced head signed or not.

So to me the question is who would I rather have in three years, Laporte or Silva?

My concern would be if you only think three years ahead, you can end up destabilising the "project" and get stuck in a cycle of churning managers and key players wanting out.

A perpetual rebuild that never arrives.

A fair question. I think I'd be inclined to focus our next defensive signing on improving us right now, given that we've brought in Phillips for the future, and VDV for now but with an understanding that he's certainly not the finished article.

Think if Kane was staying I’d want Laporte more as he’d give us a massive instant improvement.

But if Kane is leaving then I’d lean into the younger player in Antonio Silva.
I think the question for me would be how that would affect the rest of our business. Ie, if we got Laporte would we then go and splash a bit more on a quality forward/WF addition. If that was the case then I’d rather go for Laporte, however if it wouldn’t effect our other business at all then I’d agree and go for Silva.

I would like Levy to put 30m on the table and sign Laporte. Quality defender, premier league proven. Him and VdV would be good additions.

Does he have the pace to play in this style?
I've never watched him or Man City that much other than we played him. But I do recall when he was a regular always thinking we had a chance when lining Son up against him as we always seemed to be able generate chances by running in behind him.

Having said that he is undoubtedly better than anything we currently have.

Pretty sure Athletic Bilbao used high line when he was there, plus he was coached by Bielsa for a short while, I wouldn't worry about him in this system or any system.

When did Son line up against him? Laporte is a LCB and Sonny has played >90% of the time out on the left against Man City.

I realize this is highly unscientific - but I just looked up the pace numbers on FIFA:

VDV - 80
Romero - 73
Davies - 67
Laporte - 61
Dier - 54

Sure, its not an exact fit here - but its a good comparison relative to the other players.

Laporte is a bit faster than Dier, and a bit slower than Davies. We can probably do better, given our tactics.

An 80 paced gold CB on Fifa is absurdly high, he's gonna be great in game

Well, they are more accurate than random guy judging pace from his seat.

ANd, I think they give you a relative sense of pace in comparison to other players. Laporte being faster than Dier but not Davies seems about right.

If we sign Laporte where will VDV play? Will he play LB at Udogie's expense? Udogie has been exceptional so far especially getting forward which is in Ange's style.
I would prefer a CB who cold pay both RCB and LCB especially that Romero is a risk of suspension.
That's why it's important that we go all out out for Tapsoba IMO, otherwise we are gonna heaven forbid get Dier being given game time.

It’s not as if City sit deep. I’m sure he’ll do fine in a high line and I really hope we pursue this one

I don't see why Laporte couldn't play RCB
