Scotty was only about 6 million and at the time of the transfer, was going great guns. Villa would cost much more and no one can tell whether he can rediscover his pre-injury form; and as such poses a much higher risk of 10+ million going the Bentley way.

I dunno about that, a pointless thread would have to be something like 'Will Emmanuel Adebayor mind when we give Lionel his Number 10 shirt?'

maybe just paper rumours but maybe this is a signing that may happen. some will agree with it some wont. the fact is if he scores 20+ goals for us next season then its a good investment. if he doesn't then its bad. nobody is going to know for sure what will happen until may 2014.

my opinion is he still has a couple of good years left in him at least and I would welcome him

Wages. pointless thread.
Not really his wages wouldnt be high and he really wants to move to london and it seems it will be either Tottenham or Arsenal according to Hunter.

I think he can be awesome, and who would you rather have Villa or Defoe, bear in mind one has spent alot more of his career as a lone striker albeit in Spain and is very similar to Falcao minus the insanely awesome aerial ability

Villa's one of the best finishers of his generation, but I agree that age, wages and recent fitness troubles will all be prohibitive factors regarding Spurs and this signing. Same should go for Arsenal, although their signing policy has gone a bit desperate and weird in recent years.
Could still be an absolute masterstroke for someone, won't be us though.

He is only on a little bit more than bale's current wage and about 40k more than Dempsey if not less according to Us newspapers

He will take a wage cut probably to age and injury and Graham hunter who knows his barca stuff says he wants to come to London

What's the matter with all of you? This reeks of Levy. It absolutely has his skidmarks all over it.

A world class 'name' player? When do we ever sign those? That's right. We pretty much don't. Until they reach over 30 that is. Until their powers are on the wane. At which point we suddenly become a viable destination when previously they wouldn't have touched us with someone else's bargepole. Al la Edgar Davids.

Do I seriously think it'll happen? Probably not, but it really really wouldn't surprise me.

I disagree with people who think he's a spent force, watch him play he is still a great striker, but what he isn't is comfortable trying to fit into what is effectively a support role for Messi. You can't blame Barca for wanting to have the team play for Messi, to me he is the best player in the world in as much as you can call any player that, but Barca have tried to get strikers to adapt their game and it hasn't work. No one would suggest Ibra is a spent force but he never adapted to the fit Barca wanted, Villa after a struggle early on started to work better before breaking his leg but since hasn't really been given the consistent games to really get that working as well, Sanchez who might have worked as he wasn't so much a min striker anyway has struggled even more than either Ibra or Villa. Just my thinking but I would have thought they would have been better with Rossi or maybe got the wrong player from Valencia and should have got Mata, but that's besides the point, to my mind play Villa as the main striker and he will be back banging in plenty of goals. He's still got it and he's still played in plenty of games so there's no issue of fitness and his goal tally considering he has been sub a lot and been subbed a lot is still very good. I think we assume that because Barca create so many chances and have so many creative players that every striker who goes there should be able to leverage off that and score more, but somehow it doesn't work out like that, the last time they had a consistently high goalscorer was Eto'o but then he was the main striker and Messi was playing right wing and just adapting to the freer role
I'd take David Villa he's still give us a couple of great seasons and lets not forget he wants to move to get more playing time in his preferred role so that he can strengthen his chances of making the WC finals for Spain so next season he will be going all out to impress

Still think he has something to give, and having not seen so much gametime of late, he'll probably feel he has something to prove too.
If he was on a free or for a nominal fee, I could see Levy sanctioning it, even wages too, but I think Barca will demand too big a fee.

If we were just about to sign Ryan Giggs I would say - look I think his best years are behind him - but Villa is only 31 and has at least 3 seasons at the top left in him, I'll say it again , against Premier League defenders he'll score a lot of goals

As for his injury problems , how did that Dutch fella with a worse injury history and only 18 months younger do when Man Utd bought him last summer ?

A spent force? He still gets plenty of game time in arguably the best club side there has ever been, albeit not quite as much as he'd like. We'd get 2 great seasons out of him, but it all depends on the price, 12 mill is what Barca want, we want to pay about 7 mill, so if we can get him at around 7/8 mill for me his goals would be worth that.

I think we should spend the money one someone that we can build on for a few years. Maby someone like Benteke. Because we know that Benteke can handle the EPL, most of the smaller players have problem the first seasons to come in to the PL. Hope that AVB and Levy thinks the same. And if villa need 1 or 2 seasons to come in to the leauge hi is 34.. waste of money i think

As I have just said on the front page thread, not really do-able for £12-13m and I wouldn't want to see us invest our transfer budget on a player in this scenario (short term fix, high wages, no resale value).

However, con some poor club into paying £7-8m for Defoe (I am certain is on pretty high wages himself) and get Villa for a similar amount, then the deal gets a lot more appealing.

With Townsend coming back we could shift Defoe and Dempsey and i think £10m max would be a good fee, like you though i wouldn't pay more if it meant less going into a deal for a long term, younger option, this does reek of a VDV style signing though.
