That's ok mate. Personally I think Rio was a better defender in his prime than Vidic, and the Britishness aspect was about having a 'local' link to the team and the fans, someone who the fans can relate to, who they can sing songs about being England's number 1 etc - it's that link that the English (or British) CB gives a club, IMO, at least. Certainly doesn't make them better, I just think if you can have a top English CB in your team (and I meant top, not Dawson, but Rio, Terry, King, Adams, Bruce etc), you've got an inherent advantage, especially if you're looking for a leader.
It's all opinions I guess. I like Vidic cos he was a robust, yet cultured defender. I haven't really rated Rio, ever. And in the WC when he partnered Sol I was surprised he was voted the better CB than Sol. So I think I might have a blind spot to his good points.
My ideal defender is somewhere b/n Cannavaro & Chiellini, a Maldini/ King type. Fast, strong, good on the ball, great reading of the game and has few last ditch tackles as never lets it get that far. Probably why I'm no Dawson fan, too many lunging last ditch tackles.
Any CB that has come up through the ranks would qualify as local-lad type and give you that strength from the back. I'm hoping Milos Vejikivictickictaxhiomvkerscbtic might be that character. He has impressed on the few times I've seen him and in a lot of the youth match reports.
