So this is the tactical genius? Rather than going with the team that finally showed some flair against Greece (who allowed the least amount of chances in the group stages), he reverts to the team that was pedestrian in the group stages with Podolski, Gomez, Kroos and Ozil rather than Ozil, Schueller, Reus and Klose. He has lost this match for them

They called the changes 'arrogant' and 'bold' when the team sheets were submitted. A lot of people scratched their heads over this one and I think he will have some answers to provide after this (soon to be, most likely) major loss.

Really, I thought that Mario took it early and it was past Neuer before he could react. Would need to see it again to be sure.

I was most definitely joking. 10 Andre the Giants wouldn't have saved that effort.

And I wonder if he should have taken a chance and sat Schweinsteiger who seems to be suffering a bit from the injury. Although I don't know if Ilkay or Lars was ready to play Italy at this pivotal junction.

If Germany want to stand any chance then they need to come out in the 2nd half with some subs on the pitch and the knowledge that they could have easily been up 2-0 at this point if they had only pulled their socks up and played football, rather than play for the first 12 minutes and then sit back and watch Italy play for the remaining 33.

well played Italy - well worth the lead.

I didn't think Germany would look so weak - they've played into the Italians' hands.

Should be a very interesting 2nd half.

Forze Italia!

Cassano has been superb so far. Hummels really hasn't been able to cope with him

That too. He's been hesitant and slow all match. He should have started Bender who (IMO) is more than ready as he proved against Greece. These kids will never be ready unless they are put to the test, and putting them in for a slow, injured player is just the chance to let them prove it.

Almost a goal from the free kick. Germany need a goal within the next 10 mins or so if they stand any chance to tie this up.

If Mario started playing like this regularly and was focussed he really will be something special!

True, but we all know come tomorrow he'll be back to being a prat. I guess that's why he's so frustrating.

No way did I expect this but Germany only have themselves to blame. Being outplayed.
