Injured until March 2013. By the time he gets anywhere near full fitness he'll be back for 2013/14 season probably.

And who knows if he'll ever be the same player again after doing his cruciate ligaments TWICE.

March 2013? seriously?
i heard next year (last season) but i assumed that meant he'd be back to training in the fall! maybe not worth the £8M risk if he'll be out that long.

is it really that long? he was out all of last season wasn't he? if that is the case there has to be a good chance he won't ever quite be the same

Doubt we'd get any insurance for him, so really would be like putting £8m + wages on a roulette table.

He was due back sooner, but had a break down/relapse.

That also happened to RvN pre-Man U, but he didn't rely on pace like Rossi did

Rossi / Villarreal are in a crazy, unprecedented situation.

In January, he signed a contract extension up until 2016. But because Villarreal went down, they will not be able to afford his wages in the long term, so they will need (not want) too offload him this summer or soon after. But, because he's and won't play until March next year, nobody is going to risk paying a substantial fee for him. It may end up with Villarreal having to end his contract, but even this would come at a great cost to a team who are now in the 2nd tier of Spanish football. So I honestly don't see what can happen here other than Villarreal having to accept a free transfer for him. They may end up quite literally advertising him, and trying to give him away.

I'd still take him at that price as he's not only a pacy player but a smart forward that has excellent dribbling skills. He will recover and I think he's worth the "gamble".

Certainly think we should pick up his wages if Villarreal are interested in releasing him.
8m risk on top of that I'm more uncertain about.

He wouldn't pass a medical just now, so Villarreal will be stuck with him unless he agrees to them tearing up his contract.
That'd be a huge risk for him, because although a return to full fitness would yield a higher signing-on fee and wages in place of a transfer fee, there is always the possibility that he doesn't play again and never gets another deal. Tough decision.

Exactly the way I see it, unloading over 10 million in wages and fees before he even kicks a ball is a massive risk, no matter how good he use to be. We just don't have the budget for that sort of investment/risk

Former Manchester United man Giuseppe Rossi could be on his way out of Villarreal after his agent refused to rule out a summer switch for the Italy striker.

Villarreal, Champions League semi-finalists in 2006, suffered relegation from La Liga last term and are subsequently expected to lose some of their key players before the start of next season.

Rossi, who is undoubtedly one of Villarreal's key assets, is currently sidelined with a cruciate knee ligament injury that is likely to keep him until next year, but his representative Federico Pastorello does not believe this will deter clubs from attempting to secure his signature this summer.

"We are looking around to find the best solution that will be shared with Villarreal," Pastorello told Italian radio station Radio Kiss Kiss.

"Giuseppe will return [from injury] in February, and it is normal that the market can be accelerated in the last fortnight of August.

"Cost? Less than ten million, but I guess there will be a contract where there will be a fixed base and a very big portion in add-ons."

And news of Rossi’s availability could alert Tottenham, as Andre Villas-boas looks to bolster his attack.

The White Hart Lane side were thought to have made enquiries about Rossi’s availability during the tenure of former manager Harry Redknapp.

However, they may have to tussle with Napoli, who have also registered their interest in the 25-year-old.

"Napoli? I do not exclude the transfer of Rossi to the club of [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis," Pastorello added.

"I cannot exclude this possibility. But now he’s a football player for Villarreal, that’s for sure. The market is open."
