You're a professional footballer, you're approached by the top four clubs in the Premiership. You have the choice to work for Sir Alex Fergusson, Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger or... Avram Grant...

Reputation and achievements of the club managers has a big part to play in signing players. Players want to go to a club with a high profile successful manager and for the club the size of Chelsea, with the money they have, they really need a manager who attracts players and Grant isn't that man.

The average footballer cares about money more than the managers reputation. Chelsea could have Trevor Francis in charge and still buy decent players because a lot of the players will say, "I've never heard of the manager before but who cares. This is my chance to earn £80-110k a week."

Look at Ashley Cole. He didn't move to Chelsea because of the manager, he felt sick that Arsenal only offered him £55k a week.

I'm not so sure anymore - the hype surrounding Wendy has very little basis when it comes to competing in the Prem, but Modric cited Ramos as perhaps the main reason he came to us, and i don't doubt there'll be others say the same before he's gone.

Players will look for the best balance of pay and chances of success and with that comes the rep of your boss. I've never met the guy though, Ramos might be a hypnotist or something...

I think players have got to say something when interviewed, so will often say working with a particular coach attracted them to the club. But, in reallity, i suspect it is a fairly minor issue. I think in the case of Modric, it seems to have come down to a choice between us or Newcastle. Ramos and his record may have helped sway things over the Barcodes, but also would we could offer of european football, better recent league history, London and a far better squad. From what Billic has said in interviews, I think the key thing for Modric was not to go to a club like Chelsea where he might end up on the bench. He'd decided the time was right to leave Coatia, but wanted to ensure regular first team football, thus ruling out most of the Euro giants, but the club still had to be able to afford a big fee, which didn't leave a great many options. Hence, there was actually a chance he might have gone to Newcastle! How many teams in the whole of Europe can currently afford that sort of money that are in the need of a quality playmaker? I think limited viable options that suited his needs was the key reason he chose us and even considered Newcastle.

I remember Berbatov saying much the same about Jol when he signed for us, but I wouldn't be surprised if he'd never heard of Jol before we came in for him.

Grant Sacked 26-05-2008 01:12 AM General Levy Like saying "I want chelsea to win the league" MUG!

It's worse than reporters twisting every word you say. Fully expecting to see the headline "Spurs fan offers his body to Makelele" in the paper tommorow. :)

Mark Hughes to be new Chelsea manager within the week. You heard it here first - just stuck a tenner on it while the odds are still high.

Yep, Hawksbee & Jacobs said today he was the tip....but only if the British faction at Chel$ki win, if the Dutch faction win - and you know who they are - then it'll be Rijkaard.

If Hughes leaves Blackburn, he can't stop Bentley leaving aswell can he?

My understanding is that they want Scolari but want him to commit now, and he won't. Unless he has a change of heart and commits very soon, they'll go for Hughes.

So you mean Frank Sinatra has sacked Sven and it isn't even sure that big Phil will take the gig? Eek

Also SSN reporting that the Milan manager will be interviewed - that's AC not Inter. (Can't remember his name!)

Ancelotti is the Milan manager.

Scolari won't go to City. As I understand it, everyone at Chelsea wants Hughes except for Abramovich, who wants Scolari - but if he can't get Scolari, he'll be happy with Hughes. So, as I said before, unless Big Phil has a change of heart and submits to Abramovich's demands for a quick decision (and any England fan should know how he reacts to being pressured into a decision), Hughes will get the gig. Still 7/1 if anyone fancies it - I'm not going to call it easy money but it seems like it's beyond doubt.
