If we go in as we are, then we can expect a similar shape to last year.. The odd good game against top 4, the turgid shite against teams who come here to defend and we don't have the creativity to break down and the odd thrashing at the hands of City and United because we have a midfield centre of Bentaleb and Mason. All said and done, we'll finish 6th

We're going to sign more players...

Is this a thread for anyone who's experiencing the transfer window for the first time.

Deals take time. The closer we get to the end of the window, the easier a deal is to make.

It's why TDD is always busy. For EVERY team. It doesn't matter if it's Spurs, Stoke, Madrid.

This thread is ridiculous.

Eh?

Are you sure this isn't your first transfer window? Or have you forgotten last summer already?

I actually agree that we'll bring in more players, but it's hardly ridiculous for people to think otherwise. You only have to think of Frazier Campbell to remember how badly we've screwed up in the past. Last summer we brought in several players, one of which has now been sold, and the others are little more than squad depth (without a single attacking player being signed). Most people on here were confident that we'd bring in an attacking player in the last days of the window, but it never happened. It's therefore not exactly a great leap of logic to understand why people might be concerned about this window.

We won't be signing anymore new players so as the OP says what would your team and squad be with the players we have currently ?

I'm pretty confident we will sign a couple of new players. The question is more to do with quality. We'll probably end up with Victor Moses and some random French DM that we'll offload in 12 months.

Lamela was signed 29th august. As did eriksen and chiriches.
Vdv was deadline day. As were dempsey and lloris.

Yep we never sign anyone late in the window.

I remember the last transfer window. And the fact that we were completely overloaded with players. We simply didn't need to go on a crazed spending spree. There was still hope that Soldado would come good, Ade was on the books still and new manager in charge (who was playng Ade at the start of last term before the fallout). We didn't need a striker, not really.

We had a huge number of players in midfield. There was the assumption that Paulinho would come good, Lamela, Chadli. Townsend was staking a claim. We brought in Davies who was what everyone more or less agreed was the biggest need - a solid left back. Vorm, Stambouli and Dier. We had a decent transfer window in that we took care more or less of what we needed. There was no big stars but having spunked the best part of 90 million a handfull of shit 12 months previous for a manager that wouldn't last the year, that's hardly a surprise.

We were in a completely different position to what we are now where we have a mangager who has had a year at the club, knows what he wants and has already gotten rid of most of the mistakes of the AVB/Bale money transfer spunk.

I can't for the life of me understand how anyone can have such pessimism just because we haven't signed *insert whatever bloody name floats your boat* with 4 weeks still to go of the transfer window. Couple that with the knowledge that we have a fucking budget that isn't like any other club around us in the top 5/6 teams and the knowledge surely, by now, that deals happen predominately LATE in the window, not early unless you're looking to get somewhat ripped off. We're shifting players. It's what we all wanted. We're clearly trying to bring a few players in. But until Ade fucks off, that's probably not going to happen.

This thread is akin to a bunch of fucking children crying and moaning that they haven't gotten their presents a month before their birthdays.

We are not MAN CITY, CHELSEA, MAN UTD, MADRID, BARCELONA, LIVERPOOL or any other club in a position to throw money around. Rogers has spent 280 million or some ludicrous figure like that. We can't compete with that. Too many fans looking at teams like I've mentioned and getting all pissy because we can't have what they're having. They may as well go and support someone else because it's not going to change for at best 5 or 6 years.

even I am pretty convinced we will sign at least a couple more, wether they are of the requisite standard and show any ambition is yet to be seen.
This said I wouldn't be hugely surprised if we didn't as we always tend to leave ourselves short somewhere

Levy himself said that we would get more players but it would probably be in the last couple of weeks in the window.

Why don't people put their money where their mouth is. No more signings and I'll pledge £20. Anyone want to take the flipside to that bet...

... didn't think so.

Yeah I fully appreciate the bulk of your view, and as I said, I'm expecting us to sign players late in the window (for the same reasons you state). Where I disagree is in the criticism of people who think otherwise. I wouldn't call people children for being pessimistic about our transfer dealings, when we've got quite a history of being disappointing in that regard.

This thread is asking for opinions for lineups and formations, assuming we are happy with what we have. Take your ramblings to other thread please.

My ramblings are directed at the litany of people within this thread who seem sure that we're going to fail to bring any players in with a month of the window left.

No, but going into a campaign with only one recognised striker and he's only had one season, is foolhardy.

The issue isn't necessarily whether we'll sign anybody. The issue is when you wait until late August, especially in the current market, your options to bring in players who actually can compete for a starting XI position dwindle. Most players who have the talent to be starters for us fit a certain profile, and many of those players are off the market already (Cabaye, Clasie, Ayew, Wijnaldum, Payet, Suarez, Imbula, Konoplyanka, and soon Aranguiz).

The EPL television deal of 2016-2019 has changed everything. No longer do the old rules apply, as you can't bully teams like West Brom or Everton into selling their best players on your terms at knock-down prices. Even players that are deemed surplus won't be sold cheaply, as clubs now value depth in their squads more than ever before (see Welbeck, a player some here thought we had a chance to sign, going to Arsenal for a reported 16 million pounds and 100K a week). So the end result, given our relative austerity, will likely be players being signed who are on contracts that will expire in a year or who have relatively modest release clauses (in both cases, Levy has enough leverage to do a deal on his terms; see Stambouli and Fazio as two recent examples).

Do they dwindle though. I pointed out some of the players that we bought late in the window. Eriksen, lloris and lamela would all be in our starting line up.

I've explained many times that this year is different than ever before because of the 2016-2019 television deal. Lots of players we would've targeted late in the window from Ligue 1 and the Eredevisie (see my above post) have already gone because everyone in the Prem has a lot more financial firepower now than they did 2-3 years ago. Others we'd typically target are going to be more expensive than usual because continental teams know that English teams are awash in cash. We also haven't sold a Modric and Bale to bring in a huge amount of cash to help stretch our transfer budget. We are sitting on 15 million pounds in surplus cash, which won't be enough to make the 3 quality singings we need to seriously improve the squad (even if we sell Soldado and Lennon, you'll be looking at 25-30 million in surplus cash, which would be how much just one of Berahino, McCarthy or Kramer would cost).

Nobody has recieved any money from the 2016 tv deal yet.
