I’m not going to stand here and defend the agent, because he absolutely could be a parasite - lots of them are. But the Barca slant on some of these articles (all from Barca journos) seems over the top. As far as I can tell, the story is:
Barca wanted to renew his contract, on a 6 year deal with a massive release clause. He asked for wages matching a six year deal with a massive release clause, but Barca can’t give anyone pay rises at the moment, half their players are taking pay cuts just to stay solvent (which is absolutely not the responsibility of a youth player to do, by the way).
So his agents reject the deal (didn’t we just have a transfer saga where the moral of the story was don’t sign a six year deal if the terms aren’t to your liking)? Barca throw a fit and say they won’t play him at all with his contact running down.
So the agent tell them to do one, and go line up a new deal, not with PSG or Chelsea but with one of the best clubs in the world for developing young players. Because of the contract issues, they negotiate better wages and fees, since RB get to skip the transfer fee. Nothing very weird about that.
Then RedBull go to Barca and offer a few € for the player now, knowing he’s worthless to Barca otherwise. They get offended, and start looking for suitors who will pay more. Paratici gets wind and gets involved.
Now the player has two options - an offer from Spurs on probably pretty decent terms, or an offer from RB on more money (because of the lack of transfer fee) but the prospect of a year in the reserves. The agent’s preference, probably, is to strongarm Barca into taking the lowball offer now. If Barca hold firm, which it seems they are, then a decision must be made.
From the noises we’ve been hearing, the player likes our offer. We won’t know the agent’s position until it’s over. And Barca are pumping out tons of negative press to cover the fact that one of their best talents is leaving them mostly because of their own financial stupidity.
There's one thing I can't quite get my head around in all this, though. Barca's financial position may mean that they can't offer a big pay rise, but there's nothing forcing them to insist on a 6-year deal with a massive release clause either. If they really wanted to keep him, couldn't they compromise on that side of things instead?
