Is it important we buy in January?

Yeah said the same myself a couple of weeks ago. Ruiz is a very good technically, but the jury is still out for me. Saying that Ben Arfa has lovely technique as well...his goal yesterday reminded of Huddlestone's at City a few years back, not quite as impressive but it was a similar technique required, coming over the ball like that.

He did what?

lets just say he doesnt sign for us after we are third. u think if we are willing to spend, no world class forward is willing to come over for a guarantee starter spot, fighting for the title?

The question will be whether Ade is likely to take a wage drop to sign for us permanently which he has already indicated he doesn't want to do.

We have already seen with the amount of time it has taken for us to sign a replacement for Berbatov that getting a world class striker is no easy task. There are many factors that become obstacles such as wages, lack of CL football, teams not wanting to deal with us etc.. Therefore I think the earlier we can get in a replacement for Ade the better. We are currently on the up and have the finances so Jan would be the perfect time.

Wasting time on Bobby Zamora seems counter productive to me.

I've seen some lovely little touches and passes from Ruiz, and he does like to drift wide, but it worries me how powderpuff he seems to be. Some of his "challenges" are almost Pav-like, and he only gets 23 passes/game compared to Ade's 37. (Ade is pretty much in a striker's league of his own when it comes to passes.)

I think I'd prefer someone who is more of a bully and a ball-winner - considering that we will have the silky VdV next to him - but Ruiz is not a bad option and perhaps he'll grow more tenacious as he adjusts to this league.

I still hope we look to the Bundesliga for young attacking talent, though. There are slim pickings in this league atm.

Has anyone mentioned the Yak? Despite being a bit inconsistent and lazy sometimes, I have always liked him- good in the air, great tekkers, a handful and can therefore play on his own. Blackburn is a time bomb right now, Kean will get the push, either way they will probably go down and he would surely prefer coming to London to be a bit part player for a top club than play for a miserable club in the miserable north (yes Kendall we know you love it which is why you are sunning yourself in Oz). He would be a great player to replace Ade- miles more than Defoe or Pav.

And Redknapp signed him for Pompey I think.

Zamora on the bench would be great, but he won't come here to spend the rest of his days on our bench. Hoillet and Dembele are not signings that will improve our first team, they would only really improve our bench marginally.

If I was taking anyone from Fulham it would be Brian Ruiz. The guy quietly impresses in every little cameo I see. Great technique, intelligent, cool head would be a massive improvement on Pav and has proved he's happy to bide his time an earn his place.

I would take Dembele over Ruiz at the moment but I have certainly been impressed with the way Ruiz has like you say 'quietly impressed' in his last few appearances. He is an example of someone needing time to adjust, he was absolutely gash in his first few games and I was thinking fuck my ancient footwear Jol, you have dropped a massive bollock here.

he did ashley cole like a kipper that's for sure. maybe now people can see why benny doesn't sell himself every time a player attempts to cross the ball.

Cashley defended like a plonker.

Even Jonathan Wilson was moved to write about it.

Cole may be on the wane

Amid all the discussions of what's gone wrong for Chelsea this season, all the talk of high lines and the suitability of André Villas-Boas's approach, one component of an unusually rickety back four has escaped the worst blame. That's particularly odd, because in recent years Ashley Cole has had an awful press, at least for his off-field behaviour and his attitude to referees. On-field, though, the perception seems to be that Cole remains a certainty to start both for Chelsea and for England.

In fairness, he probably is still England's best left-back, but the days when he was one of the top two or three full-backs in the world have gone. It was noticeable against Arsenal how much space he gave Theo Walcott – a function of the lack of protection offered by a midfield that pressed high and, presumably, of his concern about Walcott's pace. In days gone by, Cole was as quick as anybody, but at 31 he is perhaps just starting to feel the debilitating effects of age. That's natural, of course, and plenty of players before him have managed to adapt their games to their physical limitations.

The concern from Monday's game, though, was the half-hearted leg-wag Cole offered as Bryan Ruiz turned past him to cross for Clint Dempsey's equaliser for Fulham. It was the challenge of a man who was either exhausted, or didn't much care, either of which explanations is a worry for both Chelsea and England.

Interesting.
Not sure I'd be wholly in favour of it...but it is interesting.

That's cunning thinking by Ekotto for sure. Allow 47 crosses over to prevent being skanked once. Genius.

What was he thinking when he watched Sturridge walk past him to tap in Cole's cross ?

I would love us to sign Reus, but sadly I can't see it happening.

I think over the next two transfer windows I can see us trying to sign:

A goal keeper to replace Friedel or reinstate Gomes.
A centre back or place faith in Caulker.
Young right back/left back, but isn't a necessity.
A winger/forward.
An out and out striker.
Adebayor.
Possibly another central midfielder like Asamoah, but this hinges on our choice of system and Tom Huddlestone.

So the next transfer window is less than two weeks away and naturally lots of generic threads with "I'd by these 5 players and sell these 5 players" appear. In reality though we are never going to complete ten transfers in January.

We have a very strong squad and aren't really lacking in any area. However, we are entering the transfer market in potentially our strongest position since the Prem began.

We have three experienced keepers so no need to buy there. We have several full backs on either side and Walker and BAE are becoming ever presents so buying a full back is out.

In central defence we have King, Kaboul, Gallas, Dawson and Bassong. With a couple of injuries already in this position and King as a ticking timebomb we could be looking to strengthen here. It's not easy to buy in January and the mot obvious target is Cahill. His contract is running out but would he be a stopgap or is he a natural partner to Kaboul?

In central midfield there's barely a place for Sandro or Huddlestone but out wide our backup is the slower and less natural widemen Pienaar and Krancjar.

Upfront we have Adebayor, Defoe and Pav as our natural strikers and VDV and Krancjar able to play behind.

We're playing great football with our fast wingmen pinning back the opposition so should we be looking at backup with similar attributes or are Piennar and Krancjar good enough to cover Bale and Lennon? Should we be looking at a harder working upgrade on Pav or should we only be looking at genuine top quality?

Do we only buy a player who'll command a first team place or do we still need to be looking at improving the squad?

We could do better than lapse prone Benny.

We have no quality back up for Ade nor Lennon.

And a quality central defender younger than Gallas n Leds would be good. Dawson n Bassong are not that.

I think tonight's shown it is important, some players look in need of a rest and we need another winger and back up for Ade, he looks like he could do with a rest
