Some new quotes from Vertonghen in reputable Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf make great reading:

"Tottenham are my absolute favourite. The Ajax-board is now asking a very big amount for a player whose contract running out in year. I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they soon reach an agreement."

"It would be terrible if my farewell is marred by the distorted because Ajax holding on the asking price. Of course I want Ajax financial gain, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think - perhaps with a little extra - very reasonable.

"Tottenham is a fantastic football club that tradition as I want. Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs there is already very close nearby. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players."

Keen, much? (y)

That's nice to read on a Tuesday morning. Rafa has clearly done a great job in talking to him.

Let's get this done. Regardless of what happens, this is an area we need to bolster

There's still plenty of time and opportunity for us to fuck it up. Don't get too giddy until he's signed the dotted line haha.

Not getting over excited about this one because it would be a bonus signing. An upgrade at CB isn't really a priority but he'd be a nice addition and it is nice to see those comments.

Well that's great to hear that a player of his calibre is so excited to want to join our club, when CL qualification is still up in the air.

It would be a mistake to go into next season assuming that we'll get more than half a dozen games at a time from Gallas and that King will even be playing, let alone wanting to bed a player in for 6-12 months . Maybe not quite the priority that another world class striker and a top winger are but needs to be addressed

Actually a sorting out a stable set of CBs who are more likely to be fit for the majority of the season is a rather important requirement for us, and I would say is close to being as important as finding a long term GK solution, finding a couple of strikers and a goal scoring winger.

Especially as I can see Gallas and Nelson both leaving at the end of the season.

Kaboul, Dawson, Vertonghen and Caulker, would give us an exciting set of CBs to choose from, which I think we can all agree is exactly what you would expect of a set of CB for a club aiming to win things.

Nice to read, and easily to get excited. But this is Spurs and disappointment is what we do.
