You're right on the Gomes part. God knows why Cesar is so disliked that we would rather a 1 legged keeper than him (they must really not rate him.) But how you can say Jenas was not at fault for losing his marker i really dont know. I agree that he is our best midfielder, in the sense that he's our best box to box midfielder.
People say that Modric is our best midfielder but thats an unfair comparison. They are both different types of player. He would not have defended the corner any better. Zokora wouldn't have defended the corner any better. And Huddlestone wouldn't have defended the corner any better. So its not just Jenas.
Its been a big problem we've had with our midfielders over the years. We lack midfielders who are powerful in the air and who can actually man mark. I hope Appiah is better at defending corners. Because we rely too much on the centre backs to defend, and its often our midfielders who lose their runners and not the centre backs.
Inler and Appiah ray:
JJ was not at fault for the goal
at fault was our policy of relying on Gomes injured or not
he should have been off with a decent reserve on - that ball could have been taken by a good keeper
what chance did JJ have of preventing that - very very little
as I say this game showed our best mid is JJ
and I'd like to hear anyone's views on who is a better mid than JJ that we currently have

I would like to hear how you are saying that Gomes is not a good keeper?
You are so absurdly biased towards Jenas that even if he scored five own goals, shot the rest of the team and buggered the ref you would still say he had a good game - please try and be less blinkered. As to who is better in mid than him - Mod & O'Hara for starters, both in terms of skill and commitment. Brush the love dust from your eyes and get real.
modric
huddlestone
zokora
o'hara
to name but 4 , all have a more positive effect on the team
did you watch the game ? the replay shows jj push the wigan player back into the path of the ball and he had the simple task of heading it into the net.
if he actually marked him we would of got a point !
I don't think DC is saying that, he is saying that Gomes was injured, DC is a Gomes supporter it's me thats not
But he wouldn't score Five own goals would he? he's too good and that's the point you will not see because you are so blinkered.
I haven't seen the game as I had something better to do today but if Jenas lost his man we can castigate him if appropriate but to put the blame for this bloody debacle on a player who came on with 10 minutes to go when all the "Better" players had done jack shit for eighty minutes and had no positive effect on the team in all that time is rediculous.
----
We apparently played like shit for ninety minutes and it was all Jenas fault that we lost, for fuck sake get a grip and try to be objective people.

yep WS - you're right - I'm a gomes supporter - it was the fact that once again an injured Gomes was left to carry the can that got to me
he should have been off - it was ridiculous to hang him out to dry - AGAIN!!!
as for the anti-JJ brigade - it gets better and better
the team are playing poorly - mid is not doing their job - JJ is brought on ten minutes to go - wigan have got their tails up - we've effectively lost our best two players on the day except one is still on the pitch because of HR's *** up- and it's JJ's fault we lost
unbelievable
once again JJ in his absence showed why he is our best mid
and if anyone thinks zokora is a better mid than JJ well good luck to them
disagree Huddlestone would have defended the corner better he has spent half his career playing CB and im sure he wouldnt have lost his man in that situation
I was very happy with the selection of King as DM - he certainly justified his selction as did Dawson who was excellent and will be Tottenham skipper before too long. I was less happy with Zokora playing on right side midfield. That was possibly a reasonable selection in first half to provide as much physical presence as possible and to take the sting out of Wigan. At start of second half we clearly neede more creativity and should have replaced Zokora with Jenas who has shortcomings but is equally energetic and offers much more going forward than Zokora. The alternative might have been Lennon who offers our biggest threat but does not contribute as much around the pitch. I would certainly not have taken Modric off if we wanted to win the game. Having said all that we could easily have secured a draw as until Dawson was injured, I did not think Wigan actually troubled Gomes that much.
Hi TigerTom. Sorry to disagree with your first post, but I didn't think playing King as DM worked at all. OK, we did have a bit more protection, but we had absolutely no attacking flair and were on the back foot for most of the game. He's a defender, and a mighty fine one at that, and I think we need a specialist hard tackling midfielder and not a stand in defender.
The problem wasnt King at Dm, it was King and Zokora in midfield. Replace Zokora with Lennon and everything changes for the better
I just don't agree. King looked immobile and I don't think he has enough of the right attributes to be a DM. He's also not calm enough on the ball in more pressure situations. To be fair, a certain former England manager disagrees with me, but I still remain unconvinced.
I mean this with the greatest respect.
Did you watch the match today?
He was our one player who was calm on the ball.
Our one midfielder who was not wasteful in possession.
Our one midfielder who held the ball under pressure.
Our best tackler.
The only one who marked well.
The only one who was always in the right position.
I did indeed watch the game today. I'm afraid we're going to have to agree to disagree here. The entire midfield was poor today and King didn't do anything to put himself above the crowd. I'll agree he was our best tackler, but to be fair, I'd expect that anyway. He was a centre back sitting 20 yards further forward and I just think we need more than that from one of our two CMs.
