Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth has spent the weekend in the spotlight after being linked to a Tottenham Hotspur move. Even though the 19-year-old has denied knowing anything about the claims, the Argentine press is still pretty confident the transfer is happening.

La Plata newspaper El Dia had an interview with the youngster published on Monday, and besides recalling the amazing period he’s just had, they also asked about his future.

First regarding changing clubs, the player said: “I’d like to be able to play in European football. If there’s some offer that convinces both me and the club, I will go. I hope I can help Estudiantes financially.”

Then he also commented on Tottenham’s interest: “Honestly, when it came up I became aware through social media.”

That’s pretty much a default response for any South American player, but the interesting part is really in what El Dia wrote.

First when introducing the defender, they claim he’s about to join Tottenham. Then they add a short paragraph saying Foyth only had the chance to play for Estudiantes seven times, as if the transfer was done and he’s now off to Spurs.

It’s added that if playing in the Copa Sudamericana match this weekend, he will get to eight appearances for the club ‘before his departure’.

It’s worth recalling that El Dia is the same outlet who broke the news on Saturday, saying that Juan Sebastian Verón would be travelling to London to close the deal. It was claimed the offer was €10m.

They back their information today, and continue stating the Tottenham transfer is close to being done. Given they’ve also spoken to the player, one would assume the newspaper’s sources are pretty good on this one.

Love this post. Not because I know anything about the player, because I don't, but just because of it being genuinely interesting. Big thanks

Interesting. Looks very skinny for a premiership centre back so, if he does sign, I don't see him making much impact on the first team this season. If he is judged to have the required talent though, it will be exciting to see how he develops.

He's got arms like pipe cleaners. Doesn't look built to play anywhere in an English league, let alone centre half.

Sorry but that last part is false. This thread is proof of that. It was opened on friday.
Also, that article doesn't have any new info. It's the same we've been discussing from the beginning.

What's going on to the best of your knowledge?

I think the interest is genuine and we are negotiating. Other than that I don't know.
I don't think the offer is of 10m. Looks too much imo. Mammana was a much bigger star (same age) when he left for 8.5m. This kid doesn't have more that 10 games

The Foyth may be with us but is he good enough to start, one injury and we have to revert to two CBs. Wimmer may not be the best but he has experience.

Tim Vickery was talking about this rumour yesterday in Talksport.

As for the player this was his summary : "Foyth is technically very good & can defend well. But even for his club in Copa Libertadores, he was only in bench and experienced CBs played ahead of him. Foyth is good potential for future, but Spurs fans should not expect him to be in first XI in the next season. He is nowhere near the level of current Spurs defenders"

Currently we have Toby, Verts & Dier, but we'll need another to slot in as required as Wimmer does now, so hopefully this boy could do that & a year or two be ready to push Toby or Verts for a 1st place.

That is fine, our current starters are doing just fine, but we need others coming up to fill the void when they are either injured or form starts to fall. Wimmer was meant for this, however, he is (and understandably) wanting game time now. So we need to find an alternative. If this lad is it than so be it.

Equally he looks tactically disciplined enough, athletically mobile enough, and technically comfortable enough on the ball to be Dier mk2, an understudy capable of stepping between CB and DM mid game to allow fluidity.

Hopefully another star in the making on his way. He does look a bit on the slight side though, might have to fill out a bit to cut it in the PL.
