The risk as I see it, in buying a player in his late 20's from abroad, is that they often take a season or so to acclimatise to the pace and style of Premier League football, and there's less of career to play with after the adjustment. This is what in my view would make Pedersen or Downing a better option. They're both quality players who have no need to adjust.

From what I've seen this season the adjustment-factor concerning bulgarians coming to the PL does not seem to be a problem...:)

There isn't point having Petrov unless we have a decent passer in the middle. He is player that thrives on being released early so he can exploit space with his pace. I really like him, but with our current squad I don't think we'd see the best of him. A good passer who has good vision in the middle of the park would be great for players like Petrov and Lennon, but other than the Hudd we don't have that. Petrov was at his best when he played at Wolfsburg and had Miroslav Karhan playing in the midfield. Karhan and Petrov had a great understanding and Wolfsburg would catch teams on the break because of Karhans vision and passing releasing Petrov.

Anyone else with those qualities spring to mind Joey? We've been crying out for that type of player since..... Hoddle?!

There a quite alot. They don't have to be a Hoddle like passer, just a player who is comfortable on the ball and has a decent passing range. Basically, Petrov is at his best when he is released early, in a very similar way to how Overmars and then Pires were at Arsenal. Wenger never had Hoddle like passers at his disposal, but he did and does have players in the middle who are comfortable on the ball and look to release the attacking players. Karhan, the player I mentioned from Wolfsburg, wasn't exactly in the Hoddle class, but was decent (not a great all round player) and could pick a pass. None of our current options, other than the Hudd really have a good passing range, but more than that, they really don't look up or think quick enough. Good passing players tend to know what they are going to do with the ball before they have recieved. They think one step ahead. When our current players get the ball, the tend to try and control it, then have a look around and in the end make a short sideways pass. JJ does make the occasional telling pass, but in general our midfield don't do this anywhere near enough to be a top 4 side. Players, like Demechelis, MVB (less so), Bodmer and Makoun all like to pass the ball and I think would improve our midfield and our wide players, Lennon and whoever we get for the left, will benefit form this.

He's 28. Not senile. He can still run.

What is interesting is that Pires is a very similar player, who had the same injury at the same age. Pires then went on to play his best ever football. He averaged 14 goals a season for the next 4 seasons. There is no reason why Petrov wont regain his top form.

Can I just make the point that this year we haven't seen any decent forward passing partly down to the lack of movement ahead of the ball by our forward men. Seriously our movement this year has been shocking.

Cheers Joey.

I don't have access to watch any foreign leagues at length so rely on those of you who do for my info.

Martin Petrov Contract

When he signed for Athletico on 31st July 2005, it was on a 3 year contract. Two years completed soon, that must mean he can negotiate with other clubs after that date, or am I wrong with that?

If he did sign a 3 year deal in 2005 he would be free to talk to foreign clubs (which could obviously be us) in january regarding a free transfer that summer

He is over 28 so he could buy out the existing year on his contract and leave for nothing THIS summer - a la Lampard specualtion that has been doing the rounds!!!

Spurs set to spend again

Tottenham look ready to step up their interest in Martin Petrov and Morten Gamst Pedersen.
Atletico Madrid's Petrov, 28, would cost £8million while Blackburn want £2m more for their 25-year-old winger.

Manager Martin Jol has been tracking Petrov for the past 12 months and knows he should settle quickly at White Hart Lane with Bulgaria team-mate Dimitar Berbatov at the club.
The 28-year-old was named Bulgaria's Footballer of the Year in 2006 and is available for around £8m, which is £2m less than what Blackburn are demanding for Pedersen.

Do you get the feeling from these two lines that they didn't have a great deal of info to go on for this story?

"Petrov is available for 8m, which is 1m more than 7m, and incidentally is 3m more than 5m. In other news 2+2=4"

i personally think berbatov has got some of the best movement from a player i have seen in yonks. you could definately see him getting frustrated at times by not receiving that killer pass. as for petrov, i reckon he would be an amazing signing and dimi may be much happier for having him there and that can only be a good thing.

Does Martin Petrov mean Martin Peters in Bulgarian?

 Nice one, but I think that would actually be Martin Peterson. But hey, let's ahve him score like Peters at WHL

Petrov looks to be a good player - 8 mil or more seems a bit steep, but I trust DC and BMJ know what they're doing.
