Is this the current wrist-slitting thread?

Stupid mangy Bulgarian.

Anyway...onwards and upwards (just not leftwards)

I'll be honest and say I don't know a lot about Petrov. I saw him once at the end of last season, but previous to that I've only reports to go on. He sounds like he was the dogs bollox in Germany, but this quote from yesterday's paper made me pause and question whether he's really all that...
Translation:
The Bulgarian had wanted to make clear on Monday his desire to stay in Madrid, but a decision had already been taken that Petrov was surplus to requirement. The Bulgarian's agents were looking to conclude a deal with Manchester City for eight million euros; the amount spent by Atletico two seasons ago. The Bulgarian's poor performance against Gloria Bistrita in the Intertoto Cup on Saturday seems to have sealed his fate. The Atletico directors consider Simao a more talented player and one that would contribute more goals. Quaresma, the next player that Atletico will try to sign, also is very a well equipped player technically and is versatile. Martin Petrov, in spite being practically injured all of last season, has a good reputation in England. Manchester City is a Premiership club that is looking to push on this season to finish behind the four main English clubs. During the last campaign, City finished in fourteenth, a position that without a doubt it wants to improve on.
There are a few bits in that, the fact that Atletico don't want him - remember they're a midtable/top-half club - because he isn't good enough and also the second bit bit I highlighted...

The inference being that the journalist needs to explain to Spanish readers that he's highly rated in England. You only need to explain someone being highly rated if in fact they are not highly rated in the country they're coming from.

Into that mix, you can throw his age, his injury problems (out for an entire season ffs) and as others have pointed out, his desire to go for the best contract possible at this stage of his career and you can see how some of the bluster and disappointment being expressed on here could be a bit over the top.

Next season he may prove a hit for City, he may equally be injured before September and see out the rest of his contract on crutches. Neither scenario will prove DL, DC et al right or wrong, but we should remember that making a balanced decision is one based on risk vs reward. DL has proved himself astute at this over the long run, occasionally a player will prove him wrong in the individual sense, but they will never prove his approach wrong. It's for this reason we should all put our dummies back in and keep a firm hold of our toys.

It is a shame to see Petrov joining a rival opponent, as he is a very good player. I guess we have other plans, then....

Comolli will work it out for us, I think.

We have been linked to Nene of Celta Vigo, and it has been a few days since we heared about that now, so very often they suddenly wrap up a deal for one of our targets.

Long time ago we have heared about Drenthe aswell now...

it makes me laugh when people go on about taraabt being some next generation zidane superstar. he's barely a premiership standard player. he doesn't even have a 1/10th of the talent zidane had.

Alan Brazil is the biggest f*cking moron going.

How many times has he had this ITK bollox that never came true. He meets some drunk degenerate gambler in the bookies who says "I know for a fact, etc etc" and Brazil will be spilling his guts on Talksh*te the next day. And that radio station would say anything to boost ratings.

I mean call me the biggest conspiracy theorist in the world, but could the impossible happen and Petrov got offered 60K per week at City as opposed to our 30K? I mean call me crazy, but is Petrov mad enough to go to a club who offer him double?

No, you're right, I'm spouting absolute garbage. The two Bulgarians are rubbing their hands together at the thought of going clubbing in Manchester in 12 months time.

We've seriously missed out here and maybe we're not quite as big a draw to players as we all presume. You'd have thought he'd have to wanted to come to a club going places, but how seriously do you really think european players regard our chaces of breaking into the champions league places any time soon? Unless we do we'll continue to be overlooked by the type of big players we need - as in the Petrov case.

I'm just not sure whether the thought of working with Jol excites the big players as much as the clubs we are trying to emulate. Most quality players either want to work under someone with a big reputation (Mourinho, Ferguson, Benitez - even Wenger), or will go where the big salaries are (West Ham / Man City). We've got neither.

Some points I'd like to make.

1. If Petrov's game is based on lightning pace, at the age of 29 and having had a serious knee injury, it's arguable whether he would be able to play at the top of his game for more than a couple of seasons (okay, would be enough to "blood in" Danny Rose).

2. Yes, the left of midfield has been a weakness, but it's already been muted that Bale may be tried in that position.

3. Those who question the board's spending or thier transfer policy, in my humble opinion, are misguided. Would you rather we adopt the Wet Spam philosophy and pay silly transfer fees and wages, or the Everton philosophy and spend nothing? Is our squad now better than last season? How can anyone question them when they got Brum to agree to pay £6m for Mido, even if personal terms couldn't be agreed.

4. Relax, there's over a month to go before the window shuts.

Reading some of the comments anyone would think we had missed out on signing a Pele/Maradona type player. We haven't, we've missed out on signing a good left winger, there are other good ones out there.

We've signed two left sided players...Gareth Bale & Danny Rose. Bale will either play left side of midfield or left wing back and Rose will break through like Lennon did..from the bench. We even have Taarabt & Routledge to fill in...what's all the fuss!?! :snooty:

It should also be said that clubs with big reputation managers pay big salaries, too.

OK be prepared to be shot down by someone! You (and Alan Brazil) are talking bollocks. Surely we've all seen and heard enough of Berbs to know that he wouldn't consider a deal with another team a year before it was due to happen. Maybe if we don't qualify for Champions League then there might be the potential for him to move away, but it's well known that he loves Spurs and has been genuinely affected by the way the management, team, and fans have taken to him. Call me an old fashioned romantic but I believe that Berbs is the rarest of commodities - a footballer who just likes playing football and isn't concerned with the fortune and fame that other players are so desperate to gain. I don't doubt that Berbs wants to win trophies but I also don't doubt that, right here, right now, he would rather win them with Spurs than any other team in football.

And Alfie, you know I'm always right when it comes to all things Berbatov!

Besides which, Man United are in the process of buying a £25 million pound striker!
