Mason and Dier is our best midfield pairing.

Mason is our best deep midfielder at the moment. He's a key part to our possession game. His passing is positive, and that helps us make sure our possession has a purpose - and that lack of purpose was AVB's downfall. He presses well, disrupting the opposition's passing and helping us to win the ball back.

He's also a goal threat. His run today that Kane picked out was nothing short of brilliant. He also had another run Eriksen should've picked out. He can also work some space for himself with skill on the ball. Given the freedom to go forwards, he can provide the goals from midfield that we have lacked for years.

Pairing him with Dier gives him the freedom to get out of position while pressing, because Dier will be sitting deep and covering for him. It gives him the freedom to push forwards and contribute to the attack, because Dier will be sitting deep and covering for him.

Bentaleb doesn't have the same attacking prowess as Mason, and he doesn't have the same defensive prowess as Dier. Yet. He's got potential, but if we insist on a 4-2-3-1, he isn't yet good enough to be first choice. However, I think he'd excel in a 4-3-3.

Don't need to play two DMs at home to Stoke. Ever.

Agreed. Dier and Mason was working very well, bringing off our striker for a winger and CM for a DM was negative and invited the pressure that we then cracked under.

EDIT: Reidar, can you please give an argument against this point of view rather than a negative rating?

Mason was good today - both defensively and offensively. Could have had two goals, a shame really as just one, would have sealed the win for us.

No, Mason and a new DM is the way forward, at least until Alli overtakes Mason

By not playing this type of central midfield, you'd need to leave your full backs as part of the defensive line.

Dier in the midfield means our CBs split, he drops in and full backs provide width when we have the ball. This stretches the pitch, creating space, and we overload them - as we did today to excellent effect. How we played today allowed us to have 6 attackers plus Mason for most of the match, taking the game to the opposition. I'd say that was as attacking as you could possibly hope for.

Was all ready to agree to this until last bit.

Why would Alli necessarily overtake Mason?

I like Alli don't get me wrong but I also really like Mason.

...Based on 60 minutes. Mason isn't good enough (in my opinion, I know lots of people love him because he's from the academy and all that).

Yet he was pretty much our best player today

Couldn't agree more, he was outstanding today, just as he was outstanding on occasions last season. It's the other 80% of shite that makes me think he's not good enough. The same goes with Bentaleb. Just like I said, they get a pass because they came through the academy.

I'd rather we added say Illaramendi and Camacho and had them as our CM pairing, of course I'd rather we played 3 in midfield but that won't happen until Poch is gone

Ever considered that players develop over a period of time? Was Bale the same player he was in his first game for us as he was in his last game? What were your early thoughts on Kane?

Mason is 24 years old. I think you'll agree that Bale was far more advanced in his development at the same age, no? Kane is 22...
