Defoe row threatens England build up.
England boss Steve McClaren delivered Spurs striker Jermain Defoe a massive snub after admitting last night that he almost sacked him from the squad to face Croatia.
McClaren explained: 'Losing Michael (Owen) is a massive blow but we have enough talent in the squad to cope. Crouchy will start on Wednesday but i won't be playing Defoe. We've had a chat after the game on Friday and despite it being a friendly, i told him his performance wasn't good enough and if he wants to be picked for his country, he'll have to pull his socks up'.
McClaren's amazing comments come after the job-saving Israeli win over Russia, which means that England only have to draw against Croatia on Wednesday to secure their spot in next year's Euro championships. He was said to be furious with Defoe after the Austria match, citing his lack of work off the ball and his repsonse to criticism. McClaren added: We had a chat after the match and i told him what i expect from him. He didn't respond the way i would've like him to and other members of the squad had to calm him down. To be honest, i was close to sending him home but we've since had a clear the air chat and we'll see what happens. He will not be considered for the Croatia match and i haven't decided about any future matches yet'.
Frank Lampard, who skippered the side after Steve Gerrard was replaced at half time, stuck up for the striker: 'Jermain's a great player. A few words were said in the dressing room after the match but it was heat of the moment stuff'. He added: 'He's frustrated with everything at the moment. He hasn't been playing for Spurs and he didn't get much of the ball on Friday, but we were all to blame for that. I'm sure he and the gaffer will sort things out. We all need to focus our concentration on Wednesday'.
Defoe himself was unavailable for comment last night.
