Are we missing pace and guile in the front 4, or a deep play maker? I've been asking the same question for the last 2 seasons and I still don't know. We get to the 2/3s line and seem to have fuck all in the locker. That shouldn't be with the squad we have.

I said end of last season when we bought Wimmer that Jan's place is under threat. I stand by it; If Jan doesn't perform, he is the first Belgian casualty to go to the bench. Wimmer is not just a beast but technically matched to Vertonghen and is so comfortable on ball.

Another player who will really clinch the starting place is Trippier. After watching that MLS side, I will be stunned if Trippier doesn't start ahead of Walker against Real Madrid. He may very well be given a harsh footballing lessson by Bale & Ronaldo-but surely that will improve him as a player & will help against United first game.

For last few seasons our right midfield has been a constant let down. May be finally we are sorting it out.
Two fullbacks Danny Rose & Trippier will be the pair to watch out for this season.

So, what did we learn…

I thought Trippier came out of that game with credit. He got forward well, put in some decent balls when he got there and also defended tenaciously and diligently and best of all didn't do anything fucking outrageously idiotic. Just generally looked much more sure footed (and brained) than the other herbert who occupies that space often.

I don't mind seeing a decent footballing CB given time as a CM, it can only be good for their development, but with the options we have it was a bit disappointing that players like Veljkovic, Carroll, Winks or Ali weren't given more time there instead of starting Dier, just rotating at HT with Alderwaynesworld as CB perhaps. really hope Pochettino isn't toying with the idea of playing Dier there when it matters when we have these better options.

The main thing that was reinforced, more than learnt second half, was that the likes of Winks, Onomah, Carroll etc are not phased by the big occasion and produce football to a standard which is at least comparable to those they replaced.

Just watched the game. Trippier looks like an excellent buy, should definitely be a starter for us. Other big thing for me was that Rose looks like carried his form through to this season. I was worried that last season was a blip but with him looking great it means we can have an awesome back four going in to this year. Can't see any reason for Alli not to be involved from the get go either, looked great. Anyone have an idea when Mason and Pritchard are back? Think we need Pritchard to push Eriksen for his spot and force him to up his game.

Hard to understand too. He's not an eye-catching wiz kid, but he's got some really solid attributes. Good brain, good technique, no slow, good physically. It's not like decent footballing CB's are ten a penny right now and we've been wandering around europe with our wheelbarrow looking for a decent CM and are talking about paying 20m for Everton's Mr Average.

I can understand Pochettino not raving about him, but can't understand him "not liking" him ?

I don't understand a lot of the things our past 3 managers have done/are doing.
