This 100%. Realistically, until we're in the new stadium, we're a top 6 club and not a top 4 club. We should be looking to have a side reaching maturity in 2-4 years when we're in the new stadium - then we can pay comparable wages to the current top 4.

If we crack top 4 before, great, but I am not expecting it until we can afford to pay the wages the current top 4 (and Liverpool) can pay. I would love us to sign MS but if we lose out to Arsenal, I won't lose sleep on it. We should be aiming for players looking to use us as a stepping stone and hope we make the jump before they want it. Adding in our best youngsters, investing in the youth team, will allow us to be fully prepared when we can dump £50m on players and pay them £150k a week - we're not there yet.

Sure, we could throw money at MS but we'd be gambling with money we don't have and, for all the chance it goes for us, just look at Portsmouth and Leeds

We have Wimmer, Tripier, Pritchard, Alli, Fredericks, Yedlin, Carroll and a few others available as "new" players this season. It's doubtful we will get top 4 this year so maybe we should give them a chance and see if we can win the europa?

We have to accept if one of the top 4 sides comes in for one of our targets it's over (More wages, Champions league etc) Obviously if Schneiderlin gets an offer from us and Arsenal he'll go to them. We desperately need a Defensive midfielder. This position is top priority this summer, hopefully we have a quality list if Schneiderlin goes elsewhere.

But we already done that in the Santini, Arnesen days did we not? Dawson, Reid, etc remember?!
Not saying that isnt the way forward, but a mix of youth, top quality and experience would be better.

Agreed - difficulty I guess is that we have players like Stambouli, Capoue, Paulinho and Dembele standing in their way. First job me for me this summer is not signing players but selling them

Hardly call it a brief spell mate they have been in it for 18 years i would love that to be us, but muppets yes definately.

I grew up with the Muppets and loved Jim Henson so I cant see why muppet is considered a derogatory term.

So can we just call the Arse a bunch of scummy fuck-wits instead please?

Thanks!

Yeah, i agree with you and I think we have that in Hugo and Verts (potentially even Eriksen who has played lots of CL and internationals). I'm not against signing top quality older players I just think, with the money needed, we'd be better off signing promise & potential.

Difference between now and the last time we tried this is that 1) the world has moved on (the money the top 4 can spend) but, crucially, 2) we're so close to joining them with the new stadium.

Anyway, think I've taken this thread far enough off topic now.

As you were gents

Obviously no one is suggesting we do a Leeds, and it's out of our control what his choice is. But I don't accept that we can't afford to pay £25m.

We have an awful lot of fringe players on our books on massive wages that we can sell. Chiriches, Kaboul, Lennon, Townsend, Capoue, Paulinho, Soldado, Adebayor (if we're lucky). I'm still not sure if we're still paying Holtby's wages yet. We could easily get rid of Stambouli also and bring in Milos as cover if need be.

I dont think we can keep throwing it out there that we will end up like leeds or portsmouth just because we might need to stump up another 5 or 10 million just to secure a target.
We are a financialy secure club we wont go under if we overspent by a couple of bob, it just wont happen.
And yet its a pointless arguement anyway cos the club never gambles only spends what we earn.

Can we though? There's hardly been a massive clamour for those players and we do have to be a little bit careful about splashing the case before we get rid of some of the deadwood.

Hopefully we're not in a position that we have to sell before we buy, but it's not as easy as saying 'why don't we just sell this lot?'

We are in a position where have to sell to buy. We are every summer. It's the way Spurs do transfers. It's why we miss out on players we need.

It's not easy to sell them, I accept that. But it's not unreasonable to say that at least half will go. And that's probably what? £15-25m worth and about £150-200k in wages.

I think we can afford to pay £25m but once you factor in the wages Arsenal are paying, can we match them? The second question is can we beat them as, if we only match what Arsenal are offering, he will choose them over us.

Agree on shedding players, easier said than done i think

No we probably can't match Arsenal wages wise but i'm saying there isn't much of an excuse not to meet the asking price at least. I'm sure also we could offer him a decent wad due to the reasons i've just mentioned about fringe players.

We should be getting a decison out of him as early as possible. Force the move to either us or someone else so we've either got him or if not we've got plenty of time to look at alternatives.

Poch made Schneiderlin the player he is, he was an unknown languishing in a small french team till Poch took a risk on him, you would think he would want to work for his mentor again

MS has been at Soton since 2008- his purchase was nothing to do with Poch.
