I think the problem was probably that there wasn't another serious non-Premier League, big money competitor for us to play off against Real Madrid and ramp the price up at the time. They knew that we needed to sell and low-balled us accordingly.

Yeah, it was the previous summer I believe, so we were essentially committed to selling to the next big club that came in from abroad the following year and unfortunately RM seemed to be the only serious contender. If it had been Real vs Barca interest the price would've rocketed accordingly.

Re Luka - I'm sure it was known that Levy wasn't going to sell to a rival Premiership club and with Chelsea and Mancheter Utd both in the wings sniffing, he took the RM bid got him out of the country for a few years.

Wasn't £25M what Soton wanted last summer as well? How much are Soton going to budge anyway?

This will run and run until the end of august and then on the final day sign claude makeles grandad at a reduced cost.
I still dont know why we are still pursuing if we indeed are as he has stated he wants Champions League which we cant offer.
There must be some bargain buys out there to be had which is why we have improved and increased our recruitment team.

*Schneiderlin wants to leave. He was told he could last summer, but because of their eventual sales and Koeman's ultimatum they had to refuse to sell him. They're probably promised he can go this summer;
*He'd prefer to stay in England;
*He has interest from CL clubs that he'd prefer over us;
*He's not ruled us out, however, even though we're not in the CL;
*Southampton have a price that is putting off the CL clubs from biting;
*We wait until the other interested clubs secure alternative targets;
*Southampton are left with a sell him to us or nobody option, we can then start haggling price down to where we can afford it.

The way I understand transfer dealings to work based on my limited time working with a FIFA agent (they no longer exist) while I was at uni was that clubs negotiate on a wide variety of deals at the same time and hope one or two fall into place where everyone is in agreement and then execute what the club feels are the best of those deals.

The transfer window is one giant poker game with all clubs in the world potentially involved and numerous plays and counter-plays.

The whole thing is risky, although to be fair with some of the kids coming through and Wimmer and what looks like Trippier already secured. Going into the season with this current squad wouldn't be the disaster some people think and so I think we're in a good position as we're not desperate for anything IMO. So the risk for me is minimal. I think we should in that situation make moves for the best quality of targets possible in the knowledge that we may miss out but if we pull one off, it will SIGNIFICANTLY improve the squad, rather than just block the progress of, say, Winks/Veljkovic/Alli just for the sake of giving Mr Average some game time.
