There are way too many former Liverpool players earning an excellent living as pundits, and they range in insight from ho hum to banal (Owen).

Souness is the best ex-Liverpool pundit, but only because there's a constant edge of wondering whether he's going to pick a scrap with a fellow pundit whose opinion he doesn't respect.

As for Mourinho's original comments, this was pure Magic Trick designed to distract attention away from the fact that two of his players should have been sent off - Eto'o and Oscar - and Suarez had a blatant penalty turned down.

Mourinho has always spoken with forked tongue, but it's pure parody now.

The Special One seems very relaxed telling fib after fib after fib. Imagine if Drogba was still his centre forward, diving around & feigning injury as if he'd been shot several times a game..

I'm sure he said that to divert attention, but then Hazard should have had a penalty and Lucas could easily have been sent off for his reaction to Oscar. So it's hardly the 'Liverpool were robbed' that Rodgers is making it out to be.

The PL rights holders in Norway had a competition over the summer to find two new pundits for their Soccer Saturday equivalent. The two guys who won are both completely normal people with no previous TV experience and just a burning passion for football, obviously they're well grounded and rational people and far from the cringeworthy commentating idiots and they've been a welcome addition to the shows.

Something Sky should definitely consider doing. The voice of people who haven't been former players can be just as good, if not better.

Sad thing is, they even get current players to commentate too. Can someone please tell me how Steven Gerrard was allowed to be a pundit of our match vs Liverpool? Sky is a disgrace.

I dont understand how most commentators are former players. Can they not get anyone to commentate that arent former players or coaches?

to be honest pundits always tended to be international players and successful players from top teams so why on earth would Chelsea have any, pretty much all of their successful players are still playing, people forget they were shite.

That would leave us with Alan Nielsen and Woody, if he ain't still drawing sick pay somewhere! :)

I can't stand most commentary teams nowadays. Martin Tyler and Neville are ok. Ian Darke is great. The rest are useless.

Commentary teams are highly listenable compared to the pundits! And I think that list is strictly for studio pundits and not ex-player colour commentators.

I'm really glad he brought this up yesterday.

I've always been stunned at how blatant the imbalance is on the media.

Listening to likes of Mick Quinn(not ex-player but blatantly biased fan) & Phil Thompson talk about us they are always super critical as they obviously believe they should be above us.

Here's a breakdown...

Hey wait, doesn't Clive Allen get in there from time to time?.... :meh:

Yeah, Bradley Allen does summarising on BBC London as well. I'm not sure where the graphic in the OP has come from, but it's hardly an exhaustive list. I've seen Roberto Martinez as a pundit more than Ginola this season, for example. Michael Ballack is often on Sky for CL matches. There's probably a load more as well.

Presume this is just down to Liverpools dominance for years back in the day. It tends to be the better players, or well known players that go into punditry, therefore natural to have more Liverpool players currently.

I'd expect a change to more United players over the years, with an increase in Chelsea and Arsenal too.

Who listens to these xxxxs anyway???

I watch all our games with foreign commentary/punditry and it's a far more pleasant experience.

Mourinho has a point about the pundits, a lot of them are fucking inane.

I don't see why he has to worry, he has the press eating out of the palm of his hand most of the time. Besides, he's just deflecting as usual.

Gary Neville is easily the best pundit/analyst on TV at the moment, not many people liked him when he played but he's done wonders for his reputation going on Sky.

Gary Neville is the best pundit, Roy Keane was great when he was on ITV too, even if he did only cover the negatives, and I think Lee Dixon isn't toooo bad either, at least not compared to others. Favourite commentator is actually Jim Beglin, most probably wont agree but his Bundesliga coverage is actually great imo

For me the point missed behind Mourinho's comments was that Chelsea is a club with no history and that is why there are no ex-Chelsea pundits

Agree with the first three but can't stand Jim Beglin,I actually would rather watch in silence than listen to his inane comments.

Each to their own :) I think a common criticism of Beglin is that he often talks about something outside the main play. But for me that's a good thing, I can already see the play with my eyes, so if he's looking out for things off the screen or runs which could be made off the ball etc then it offers a different insight to the game. The opposite of Andy 'that ball really moved' Townsend

Cannot stand Lee Dixon, he's an obnoxious prick who is proud of his bias.

I've liked Danny Murphy whenever he's been on, always seemed down to earth.

Danny Murphy is pretty good and articulate. Savage sounds and looks just like a twat and god knows how he gains employment.
