Doherty isn't going to be whipping balls in, that isn't his game at all. He drives into the box quite narrow and gets beyond the striker even. Pull backs yes, but Trippier style crossing isn't in his makeup.

You could well be right. Point I was trying to make was Doherty can actually execute a pass into the box, and find a team mate.

Something Aurier struggled with more often than not prior to this season. (y)

As per latest dragon ITK I’d favour bringing in two strikers as we need options up top and ever since Kane has emerged we’ve hardly had any alternatives.

Kane and Son would probably score most of their goals from crosses too, if we had someone who could cross a decent ball
But at least Kane and Son score lots of other types of goals too. There's no point in bringing in another striker like Soldado who requries excellent service in the box if we're not able to provide it.

There's just absolutely no chance we'll sign two strikers, really. What an illogical piece of info that was

Yeah I mentioned in the Doherty thread how his attacking play style is not what most would expect. I suspect he can cross fine but just like Son he is much more likely to play a 1-2 to get in the box or actually be on the end of the cross not provide it.

our crossing situation is bizarre, Doherty complicated it even more. I trust Davies, Bergwijn, occasionally Lamela and GLC, and sometimes Aurier to cross a ball well. But even Davies who is our most consistent crosser is probably only a 7/7.5/10 and I liked Ross’s delivery more. Aurier exists non-binarily as good or bad, he pumps them in at such a rate there’s a lot of variance. Sometimes he really does play accurate crosses that even a player like Bellerin AWB or Walker wound struggle to provide on an inch perfect level, but the next half his timing is way off and he becomes some bizarre thought experiment of a hyper athletic fullback lacking technical skills but addicted to crossing poorly every chance he gets, created in a lab to give @Bus-Conductor constant brain aneurysms.

Son and Kane and less so Moura can cross decent to good but they’re usually our main targets and will look to cut infield to shoot more often than not — I think we’re all ok with that proposition but if there’s one thing we can criticize them on it’s that popping a ball to the back post once in awhile would Add complexity to the attack, something they almost never do, Probably a function of Son /Kane being chance starved which goes back to the central issue here. After then I genuinely think Toby and Dier cross better than anyone else at the club, including all of our CMs and reserve attackers. Dier especially has a peach of a final ball, while winks and Sissoko seem to only be able to play short passes in the final third without blazing the ball over.

In short I’ve always maintained Eriksen left a huge hole in our play, like taking both Silva and KDB from city in terms of crossing and general fluidity. I’d love him back if it was still the 2015-2018 CE, sadly don’t think he is anymore.

It also doesn’t make any sense. The mystery player will apparently cost £40m and has the potential to be a £100m player. But if his club drop his price tag to £25-30m and subject to some outgoings we’ll sign both Watkins and the mystery striker.

Brentford reportedly want £25m for Watkins. Add the reduced figure for the mystery striker and that’s a £50-55m outlay.

Why are we pursuing Watkins at £25m when he’s decent but nothing special and having the special player as a wishful thinking signing if our lotto numbers come in?

Surely we should be going all out for the special player with Watkins being the back up?

Granted we may not have a spare £40m at the mo but if we’re hopeful they’ll reduce the fee then the revised figure is going to be similar to what it would cost to sign Watkins ?

I get the feeling the mystery player doesn’t even exist.

Whether we bring in one striker or two, whether the striker(s) Are home grown or not,it still does not get away from the fact that it now being just 5 days before the beginning of not just the new season but of a ridiculous batch of games in a very short period of time and we have only Harry Kane and no other striker in the squad.
That is shameful.

Our best crosser in current squad is most likely - and quite ironic - the one player we would like to be on the recieveing end of those crosses: Harry Kane.

Surely Villa are selling Grealish? They're talking of spending close to a £100m this window.

Back to the drawing board then... :banghead:

That is a fair chunk of money, Neal Maupay scored the same amount of goals (25) then moved to Brighton for £20mill last season ... Watkins, and I have been saying for a while that we should give him a look, isn't worth north of £30million quid.
