...there've been a few threads about Zokora and debate over his qualities as a player. Generally, aside from opinion about his abilities, there's a fair consensus of warmth toward the man.

Maybe this has been done before, perhaps ad nauseam, and if so, feel free not to contribute, but...

Excluding the obvious stars we've had over the years, are there any players that you miss?

By this, I mean players who had something intangible that you liked, but you really wouldn't necessarily have them back in the squad today?

Players you can or can't explain (although an explanation is better, very often these players can't be explained), perhaps players who'd bring a furrowed brow and a shake of the head from other forum members, maybe even some really borderline players, maybe some absolute howlers.

I'm not saying they have to all be in the same class, but just players you maybe felt that same warmth to, even though they really weren't our greatest superstars.

Just off the top of my head, I can say the following:

- Nico Claesen.
- Paul Walsh.
- Pedro Mendes.
- Steffen Freund.

Total guilty one.

Mainly because I just really wanted so much more from him at the time (which you could apply to a lot of players)

Slightly different as well because the warmth has long since gone...

*cringe*

Terry Naylor.

Admitting my ignorance since the player was just before my time as a fan, and not wanting to stray off-topic for too long, I had to do a Wikipedia search on Terry Naylor, and a quick read, plus a good look at his stats really does show the difference between Naylor's described type and the footballer of the modern era. Well worth reading his details, looking at the years and the stats.

In no particular order, just the order I remember some really great - not necessarily star - players for us (ok, and a few 'stars', too!)

Cyril Knowles, Pedro Mendes, Tony Galvin, Steve Archibald, Mike England, Jurgen Klinsmann, Dave Mackay, Alan Gilzean, Clive Allen.......bloody list is endless!

Blimey, this is enough to make you

I just meant if anyone had a slightly odder choice.
Those are all solid in my opinion.
Pedro might get questioned, but I'm glad someone else liked him as much as I did.

Might've been the ignored goal from the halfway line against Man U that sealed it.

Always liked Simon Davies, i remember a time when i thought he was the next giggs!

Yeah, I'll go for that.

I met him when we'd just signed him from the Posh with Matt Etherington, and he was the nicest bloke.

Loads of players piling past fans onto the team bus, Luke Young in particular barging people out of the way outright, with a burger or takeaway in a polystyrene container.

I was surprised that nobody where I was seemed to know who Davies was at that point.

He just stood next to me outside the coach and we chatted away about the club, undisturbed by people trying to mob Chris Armstrong.

Davies' game seemed to get better and better and same for his national team, then he seemed to drop right off at some point.

Postiga was the first name and only name I have got printed on the back of a spurs shirt. When he signed, his name just stood out to me, much like berbatov, of being the next European Wonderkid. Helder Postiga...

I met him the day after he scored the winner at WHL vs liverpool as well (2-1). He was not even that bad as far as I remember, took him a while to get his first goal yes, but I recall him being generally unlucky in terms of goalkeepers pulling off some magnificent saves to deny him.

Funny how he has gone on to score goals for Portugal in major comps, scored at these Euro's from the bench, scored later equaliser vs England at Euro 2004, and to cap it off, scored in the penalty shoot out via a cheeky chip down the middle, in which we got knocked out.

I was never crazy for Iversen.

He always had a look on his face when he scored that was half sheer and utter delight and half sheer and utter wide-eyed astonishment.

I have to admit when he scored I let out the most uncontrolled cheer and promptly got told by my mates to shut the f**k up.

I was convinced that would be the catalyst for him having an amazing season with us after that ... rather than be sold back to Porto which is what happened :(

Wow, Qu Bo.

Totally gone from my mind.
Not even sat next to Acimovic or Bunjevcevic.

Hopefully this thread's not in danger of becoming a worst players thread etc.

I always thought Mendez and Postiga were going to be huge, they were both very skillful but just couldn't compete in the English league as well as we wantedthem too.
Couple of older ones being Paul Walsh and Ronny Rosentail. (maybe its the ponytail). Paul Stewart was another one, i met the bull once in a sports store when i was about 7, i was the only kid there, but he seemed nice.
