How old are Gerrard, Lampard, Jagielka? And yet they all say a 32 year old Rooney won't be there.
Yeah, like Woy has the bottle to ditch all the oldies.
It's England's way to have to play the best (?) available team for every game.
They can't pick a squad of under 24s, based on potential for 4 years time, because they'll say anyone up to the age of 34 (ish) could be in it.

As those who frequent the youth thread will know, I follow our youth teams fairly extensively. Josh Onomah is one of the 3 players I'm most excited about (Cameron Carter-Vickers + Nathan Oduwa the other two). Whether he'll play for England in 2018 is a huge question, but I have no doubt this guy will be a successful footballer, almost certainly at Premier League level, and I certainly hope at Spurs.

And that says a lot considering that excludes 4 other players who represented Eng u18s last season

I recall a similar exercise after, I think, the 1994 World Cup. Three pundits, including Bill Nick were asked their opinions. Two out of the three, including Bill, opted for Danny Hill.

CCV + Onomah are both an age group below, but were 2 of our best players in the U18 team last season. CCV was 15 for half the season! Onomah represented England U16 and U17. CCV didn't, but I'll be shocked if he doesn't this season.

Oduwa was one of those who did play for England U18s last season.

After having seen the quality of teams in Brazil, along with our own fairly inept displays, it just shows that the old arrogance hasn't gone away. Not one of them said 'I think we'll struggle to make the World Cup next time'.

Touch wood, they qualify. If they do...

Oliver Kay, The Times chief football correspondent
It would still be a young team by 2018 ... but not one - sadly - that would go to Russia, if they qualified, with serious hopes of winning the World Cup.

Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror chief football writer

Having squeaked through via the play-offs (paying the price for falling out of the top nine in Europe by next summer), expectations will not be high for Gareth Southgate's team. I suspect that getting out of the group will feel like a triumph after the last two World Cups.

Daniel Taylor, Guardian and Observer chief football writer
It is a recurring theme from generation to generation with England permanently stuck in the same old loop. Can they win the World Cup in 2018? It is not a credible debate.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer
If England actually qualify for the 2018 World Cup ... It will need a lot more to come through ... to even think they will make any serious impression. ... But winners? No chance.

I Know it was only a testimonial game (Ledley) but I loved the goal Oduwa scored, so much composure

I know I was just adding to the point that 2 out of the 3 you named were arguably better than those who played Engu18 last season. Just shows the potential they have

He effectively came on as a sub for Paulinho last night as Paulinho went on the wing and Onomah was in a sort of no 10 role. He started more right and then moved leftish.
If Soldado had been paying attention he would have had a great chance on goal after Onomah chased down the goalie and forced a hurried clearance. Josh did not look nervous and played a few neat short passes.

Not one of them picked Harry Kane. How wrong they will be proved to be...

Even if the England team is littered with players from the great team poch has built for us in 4 years time woy will play with a completely different shape and tempo so they all like like donkeys. See the liverpool contingent in brazil for evidence of this. Got to hand it to the man though it was pretty impressive for him to send 3 different first xi's out in 3 games and manage not to play to a single players strengths.
