Agree late runs into box are a big part of his game. Problem is, with Poch's system, the back two are needed to be conservative in position to split the CBs and to cover for fullbacks bombing forward. Look at Bentaleb's heat map on Sunday, he had a ton of time covering for Rose which is by design. That doesn't really work when you are bombing into the box late.

On top of that, the band of 3 behind the striker are expected to interchange and attack high up the pitch.

Yeah this basically. I also still can see him playing as part of a two alongside Capoue (although he will have to adjust his game a little) against lower teams at home. Capoue or Schneiderlin can dominate in front of back 4 against these teams if the pressing is on point, linking with Eriksen and Lamela which allows Paulinho and Chadli to get in box.
I think the CM 2 need too much discipline for Paulinho to work in there and I think, if he did play in the CM 2, the front 4 would lose a bit of freedom. He would be worth trying in the 3 behind the striker and think he would be a better option than Townsend and possibly Lennon, but still feel Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela & Holtby are better options and would he be happy being 5th choice? I also think he doesn't add anything to the front 3 that we need and the others don't have. I would prefer my 4th/5th choice to be someone with pace that likes to get in behind the defence (Rodriguez or Welbeck for example) as we don't really have anyone with those qualities.

Someone like Rodriquez or Welbeck could also come in handy if Ade goes to the AC.

If we get Schneiderlin and him and Capoue are first choice as assume, and they're sitting and covering full backs controlling the game then the 3 behind ST have to be providing goals or assisting. Looking at squad as is Chadli, Lamela and Eriksen do, beyond them Lennon and Townsend offer neither. Pace is pointless if doing nothing with it. Holtby is a question mark, think he has it and hopeful more than sure plus there are rumours of Hamburg switch. Paulinho does and has shown it. If it was me I'd replace Lennon and Townsend with Rodriguez. Have Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela, Holtby, Paulinho and Kane while Rodriguez gets fully fit and then reevaluate in January. We need 6 for these 3 positions at least, we need to fully rotate for EL and bare in mind injuries.

we certainly cant ship both Holtby and Paulinho at this point, or we'd be insane to do so.

I think Paulinho could play DM if Holtby was in front of him, Ericksen not so much. Paulinho could also play in the front 3. In any case, I think he is good enough to feature regularly. Its Poch's job not mine to figure out how.

I like that in theory, but Rodriguez is looking like he will be back in 3-4 weeks (apparently) so it may be 1 player too many.

I ManU were after Paulinho it may have been prior to forking out a gazillion for their new boy.

Not sure if they would still be interested, or more likely if they could afford another mid.

Actually, it could just be this reduction in funds that prompted them to shift their attention from elsewhere towards Paulinho.

Isn't it Poch's job to figure out if he is good enough to feature regularly in this system?

At first blush, Poch did not see Paulinho as a front-3 guy when he played him last week. That could change, but it seems Poch still seems him as part of the CM 2, which means he has to find time after Capoue, Schneiderlin, Bentaleb, and Dembele...seems like a long-shot to get "regular" playing time under those conditions, needs to show significant improvement in his defensive capabilities.

He is going to have to force Poch to think of him as an AM if he wants anything close to regular playing time in cup or Europa games, or he is going to have to beat out the other CM-2s

The reality is he is a good player, who is a poor fit for this system. I think he would be better off in a midfield 3, but I don't think Poch should scrap his system, just to fit Paulinho into the team.

Stobart:

Vlad Chiriches, Sandro, Paulinho and Lewis Holtby are among the players who could be sold before the window closes next Monday.

Some mighty fine news to wake up to this morning. -sips coffee gleefully-

Where did @Blake Griffin go? A&C get sick of him or something? Figured he'd be all over this.

I didn't agree with Blake re Paulinho but at least he was reasoned in his attacks of him. It wasn't mindless. Be boring if every thread was just a love in of X Y or Z player.

Don't get why he got banned, if it was just for voicing an opinion?

I think it was going off-topic in the ITK thread...

At first, BG was being reasonable with his opinions (albeit I disagreed with him) but then he kept on posting "jokes" about him and taking the piss constantly, which was completely unnecessary.

It got to the point where he seemed to rejoice when he played badly for Brazil.

As much as I'd like to see Paulinho off our books sooner rather than later, I do think a loan to Italy would be a good idea. Would likely increase his value, and there's of course every chance he changes his game such that Poch sees some use in him. That having been said, I would much, much rather we develop Bentaleb than continue trying to make Paulinho work.

I would be very happy with a midfield of Capoue, Schneiderlin, Dembele, and Bentaleb.

Interesting sidenote, I wonder if the reason we've not allowed Mason to go out just yet is due to what may be going on with Holtby. IMO, it would be foolish to allow both Mason and Holtby to go as I think it would leave us too exposed at both CM and CAM. Mason is of such an age and development point that I think he would likely be content with playing backup to Eriksen, with the occasional opportunities to play within the "two."

That's exactly it. Don't have a problem with the guy, he raises some good points as do most people on here. He just has a tendency to overdo it. I don't mind people disliking our players, we all have players we love and hate, but I don't want any of our players to fail just to prove a point.
