I think it’s pretty obvious when someone says they hate Sissoko, they mean they hate that he plays in our team as opposed to hating the man himself. You can’t hate a player who puts in effort and does his best for the team no matter how limited he is. He didn’t put a gun to Levy’s head and force us to sign him.
That said, I think we all know he isn’t really good enough for a top 6 team. I’ve read a few comments like ‘he wasn’t as bad as Player X on Saturday’ etc but that’s not actually a compliment is it? That’s just saying he was our second worst player on Saturday. I read stuff like that quite a lot.
Out of all the sentiments written about him, the one I agree with most is that because he’s set the bar so low for himself, every singe extremely average performance he makes is made out by some people to be a great performance, whereas what they probably really mean is that it was a great performance ‘for him’ - but if Eriksen or Dembele etc had put in the same performance they’d have been slated.
I hope he proves all us doubters wrong. We all know his limits so maybe if one day he produces a powerhouse performance against a team like Arsenal where he presses and tackles and fouls and fights and basically puts in a ‘Dier v Chelsea’ type performance then we’ll take him to our hearts more. I think that’s what he’ll have to do to win the fans over because he’ll struggle to do so using ability alone.
