Baldini has to go really. Soldado and Paulinho were never suited to the way we play.

Ridiculous signings and a big waste of money.

I'm far from Baldini's biggest fan, but thats way over the top. I think he is on the contract and contact side of things more Levy 'light'.. Ian Broomfield is back as our our main man for scouting.

Can Mason tackle? does he have any pace? tactical discipline?

If he doesn't have any of these attributes I wouldn't trust him in central midfield. Further forward he could be useful though.

If say yes tactically. He's a good footballer and has played central midfield for the u21s the last couple of years. He's also played there on loan as well, both in a three and a two where he'd have to have more of an overall game. Youd hope playing in central midfield in division 1 for Swindon that that would improve his tackling and all round game as I'm assuming you'd need a bit about you in that division playing in that position. Especially him as he's build is so slight.

He's a player who has changed a lot physically since he used to play in the no. 10 role for the youth team. He's bulked up a lot and is surprisingly strong. He's also surprisingly competitive in the air judging on his preseason performances.

As far as tackling goes he's useful; not at a Capoue or Stambouli level but better than Dembele, Paulinho or Bentaleb. He's not slow but I wouldn't describe him as fast either.

Mentally he is disciplined and tactically astute.

He's already shown that he pairs well with Capoue; they seem to be on the same wavelength. Obviously he can shoot (as we saw last night) but I think he would be wasted further forward. His main asset is his vision and passing ability both short one touch passes and ability to switch play with longer passes either cross field to release the wingers and full backs or pinged forward to the striker.

Stamina may be an issue, staying healthy certainly is. Apart from that he's a solid all-rounder with no obvious weaknesses in his game and a lot of potential to improve if (and admittedly it's a big 'if') he can stay injury free.

Chuck him in on Saturday. Our younger players have done well over the years against the scum, lack of fear or whatever, Rose, Lennon and bale were all great when they first played arsenal

Starting Mason away from home against the scum would be suicide in my opinion. Give him some game time yeah, but not from the start. Dembele, Capoue as center 2 for me in this game.

Decent tackler and makes interceptions, and not afraid to put his foot in anywhere. I recall seeing him and Tom Carroll play as a CM2 in an u21 match and was surprised to see that Mason was doing almost all the defensive work and was very disciplined in staying in his position plus covered a lot of ground.

What really makes him stand out is his range of forward passing which is quick and incisive - he's light years ahead of Capoue. Stambouli or anyone else we have as a CM. He also has a great vision of the match which means that he's making passes which are creating opportunities for team mates - no surprise that apart from the goal he scored he was the person to passed to the player credited with the assist in 2 of the goals last night (so 1 goal and 2 key passes resulting in a goal - plus 3 key passes which did not). Passingwise he's better than MS at Southampton.

So Mason with Capoue or Stambouli or Bentaleb as a CM2 would be very effective (the Capoue/Mason CM2 was for me one of the biggest plus points of pre-season). ATM its just a question of Poch selecting a few matches (EL/lower PL) to show that Mason can play there - although as he's technically one of the best players to come out of the Academy, seems to have nerves of steel and great dedication, the risk that he doesn't step up seems very low.

The guy's full of confidence and seemingly fearless. Don't think that game would faze him, in fact he knows exactly what it's all about and what's required. Much more than others who would usually get a start in front of him.

You 'think'.

Let's hope so.

Soldado was an awful signing and showed that Baldini didn't understand the physicality of the Premier League.

I agree with this, I liked Mason's comment on the OS after last night:

"Of course, it's every Tottenham fan's dream to play against Arsenal but I'm not going to get carried away - we'll see what happens."

As you say he'll know more than most what this game means, and it'll mean something to him personally as he's one of us. I'm not sure whether or not to start him, but why not give him a go? I guarantee he'll have more of an affect than most...

Personally I'd stick him in a 4-3-3 (which we will never play) against Arsenal:

---------- Stambouli ----------
Capoue/Bentaleb ------ Mason

Lamela ---Soldado--- Chadli/Eriksen

Something like that.

Thought about sth like that as well. What can happen at worst? A defeat is expected anyway. Play chadli and we have with eriksen a real weapon on the bench. Wont happen though

Whilst I accept it's a risk. The old saying "if you always do, what your always did, you'll always get, what you always got" comes to mind.

When did those two last have a really good game together? In fact, when did Dembele last have a great game full stop? Can't think of one for us. Talented undoubtably but never produces in my opinion.

Give the kid a go. Can't be any worse can it?

We were bidding for Soldado the year before he signed. I think he was quoted as saying this.I wouldn't be surprised if he was a committee signing. I still think he can make it, he just needs quick interchanging play around him to make it work.

I think on the break and counter attack is where we will see the best of him, we just need to move the ball forwards a lot quicker than we have been.

Exactly the team I'd go for. Get a proper front 3 at them and allow Stambouli to shield the back 4. With Capoue/Mason hoping to create.

They are great going forward but are there for the taking at the back

I agree it could work if we fit the whole team round his style but we shouldn't have to. A top class striker can create his own chances and adapt.
