People can slag off Doherty all they like but Bale hung him out to dry. A fair few times the camera caught bale just standing there watching while Doherty get overrun in a 2-on-1 or even 3-on-1 at times. I genuinely don't know what people expect Doherty to have done in most of those situations but there's a huge lot more Bale could've done

Don't get me wrong, Doherty is shit, but a lot of the issues he faced were down to Bale not being arsed to help him out.

Bale was an absolute disgrace today IMO. You'd think after we've effectively made his career and then saved him from his exile in Madrid that he'd at least have the decency to pretend to put a shift in. It looked for the last couple of games like he finally got his head together but today was arguably the least effort he's put into a game yet. And then for him to have the nerve to shake his head and huff and puff when he got dragged off? He can fuck right off after that. His attitude is just stinks and there was no disguising it there. There were a lot of shit performances and tactics today, but Bale's is the hardest to swallow for me. It wasn't just a poor performance he looked like he just couldn't give a fuck whatsoever and in a crucial game, never mind NLD, that's just not acceptable.

Moura 9 MOM.
Lamela 8.5 for shithousery and Rabonas.
Kane 7 for quality despite only coming on for the last 20 mins.
Sanchez 7 for putting in a shift and looking pissed that our attackers weren't attacking.

The rest... meh 4's & 5's.

Docherty statuesque perfection -10

Joke of a performance.

Arsenal deserved to win but they are not a good side. If Son had stayed on I would have expected us to win. However even accounting for that I still think we were below par; and for me the surprise lies in CM. Pratey is their only good CM and Xhaka is shit (lacks the athleticsm to play DM); and yet they still dominated us especially in the first half.

Lucas Moura - 7 my MOTM and I think few will disagree with this (it's between him and Lamela). Took players on and kept going at them until the very end; not everything comes off, but that's the attitude you need to beat a decent team.

Lamela second yellow was just unnecesary and stupid; I think everyone (JM certainly) knew he was going off when they saw that.

Sanchez; bad on the ball but compensates with atheleticism; unlucky for the pen.

Our right flank (Bale + Doherty): a complete shambles. All their chances came down this flank. Tierney and Smith Rowe are decent players but have less than 3 PL seasons of exp between them. I hardly saw Bale track back in the 1st half. The situation didn't improve in the 2nd half, forcing JM to sub him for Sissoko; which was basically a poison pill to swallow.

Kane was mostly uninvolved in this game but I give him the benefit of the doubt. Without Son there was no one making good runs so he couldn't drop back and played into Luiz's hands.

Tanguy: Needs to up his tempo on the ball; make decisions and release the ball faster. Against a good DM (Pratey) he can't turn his way out, and lost the ball several times too.

still doesn't erase the fact that the goal we conceded was squarely down to doherty not being able to defend 1v1.

Sanchez and Lamela were the only two to look interested and put real effort and quality into our side. Unfortunately they both put themselves into situations that cost us the match, but frankly, I blame the rest of the team for letting those two down!!

Ndombele hid in that first half, didn’t look to move into space at all and PEH was no where were he needed to be, dropping Doherty in it constantly by not tracking the runner.

Doherty poor but given too little support, Bale and Kane woeful, but to be honest hardly saw the ball.

Reguillon was average, nearly cost us a goal when trying to push the ball into a gap and hope to win the race, but in short we only ever Harasses in ones, whereas Arsenal always set up to harass in 3‘s and thus never gave us space to play.

No MoM from me today.

I tweeted someone about this last week, anybody with an ounce of football nous would of foreseen this situation.

1, Even AVB played Bale in a suitable position to accomodate his defensive shortcomings

2, Didn't JM expect this to happen? I can't believe he never so for me that is managerial negligence on his part, 15M a season you say?

3, I was shocked at the selection of Doherty today, he has been awful all season.

Sanchez motm - faultless performance.

Very poor defeat - arsenal are a bottom half team and looked it when put under pressure against 10 men.
Bale can shake his head as he came off but he didn't turn up.
Same with Ndom - lucky to stay on as long as he did.
Doherty unfortunately did turn up.

Only positive technically was Sanchez, he was immense, been improving game by game recently, looking very solid and deserves praise for taht .... and defo not a pen , it was a ridiculous decision

Moura MOTM but would have given it to lamela if he had stayed on the pitch, although you could argue it took his sending off to get the team to start playing!!! Not a penalty for me..... Sanchez played well, as soon as bale got kicked a few times he stopped trying needs to man up

I on;y disagree a bit, PEH was no better than Ndombele so he gets a 3 and Kane gets a 4 from me as he could only be arsed for the last 15 mins

The more I watch the penalty, it’s incredibly harsh on Sanchez. He has flown in to make a block, as you’d expect in that situation. Lacazette has spooned his effort and kicked Sanchez on the follow through. Aside from amputating his own leg, I’m not sure what else he could have done.

Not saying it does. I even mentioned in my post that Doherty is shit, but at least he did something even if it wasn't very good. I just find it odd that most of the hatred seems aimed at him when Bale stood there and watched his FB getting spit roasted time after time after time and didn't even pretend to look bothered about it. He hardly broke into a light jog when we didn't have the ball. It's just pathetic.

And then for him to get the hump at being taken off? That's Bale done for me. I've largely defended him up until now but the way he acted today is the nail in the coffin for him as far as I'm concerned. He clearly doesn't give a fuck whatsoever and is making an absolute mug out of us because he knows he's got credit in the bank. He's exhausted that credit today as far as I'm concerned. Utter disgrace.

Mourinho 3 - Whilst Mourinho said the players were not good enough first half they were clearly playing in a low block tactical set up with no plan to deal with Tierney and Rowe-Smith on their left. Time and time again they doubled up on the hapless Doherty who got zero help from Bale. Højbjerg and Ndombele were marking spaces too deep which meant Arsenal had a very comfortable time in possession and could pick off Doherty time and time again. In comparison, whenever Bale, Son or Moura got the ball Arsenal players were all over them like a rash, doubling up. We were out thought and out fought. As we have been against all top 8 opposition this season. Mourinho is past his sell by date and his low-block anti-football is horrible to watch, and impossible to justify. The Mourinho of 10 years ago would have made a double substitution after 25 mins given how bad we were. Nowadays it looks like there is no real fight or spark to him. If that is the best he can get from our players in a NLD when we had the chance to go 5th with a game in hand, then he is clearly not the man for the job.

Ratings Lol....
Mourinho 10 for his masterstoke playing Doherty and actually leaving him on.

Absolutely insane that he came out to play the second half. He was clearly targeted all match. Tanganga or Aurier would have at least countered their pace more effectively.

Lucas (7) and Lamela(7) tried and Lamela scored a beauty (assisted by Lucas)
and then got himself stupidly sent of.(-3)
Sanchez (7) played well and the penalty was contentious though the tackle was reckless(-2)
Rest share 20 between them.
A day to forget .but not to forgive
Mourinho(1) picked an attacking team and then couldn't get them up. even for an NLD.
Picked our worst full back for a predictable overload down the left. Bale a disinterested spectator.
Failed to notice that Arsenal's defence which insists on playing out
makes errors but we didn't press them.
Dreadful performance except when we go down to 10 and there's 15 minutes left.
Why?
Arteta rewarded by not only capturing the moral high ground by disciplining his captain
but by winning a game much more important to us than them.
