You thought Trippier was better than KWP?

Yes I did taking emotional attachment out of it.

I'm not a fan of trip, I think he should only ever be back up reserve at most , 3rd choice as things stand but People now seem to hate him so much its gone silly .

Kwp was quite clearly a very one footed RB playing as a Left back . Provided nothing in attack, never..or hardly ever crossed the ball because he couldn't, had to always check back inside on his favoured foot.
And a massively silly defensive error ended our chances

Was tripper great? Not at all, pretty average which is his usual speed. Missed a pen , but is that his fault that llorente and gkn are so completely useless they can't kick a ball? One can only head it and the other is a total semi pro just stealing wages at the highest level. Tripper would I assume be 6 th choice to take a pen behind...
Kane

Deli
Eriksen
Lamela.

But apart from that he put it some fairly decent crosses and passes in the second, and linked well with lamela

Oh dear.

I still don't really disagree with the personnel selected. Firstly, lets deal with who was missing. Eriksen has played so much in the last few months and has looked to me desperately in need of a break recently and off his best. Alderweireld has been our most reliable centre back. Winks is our only central midfielder currently available fully fit and also in a bit of form and rhythm and he too has had a heavy workload. Rose is our only fit left back, and coming out the other side of an injury disrupted couple of years and back to top form and showing he's an important facet of the team. Add Lamela also who we know has issues, has to be managed, and had already played twice this week and so was obviously going to be a sub today. All of those are pretty crucial to us at the moment and for the rest of the season, if they play today and get ruled out for any length of time I guarantee there is uproar. It was an early round of the cup, it wise correct (for me) to rotate.

On the whole I think Poch got it largely right for this game. In my 'team vs......' post I chose 10 of the 11 that were selected. The final bits of decision making though I'd say were badly wrong......

Looking at the side I'd have gone 4-4-2, it's the most coherent system for the strengths of those available. Back four, two sitting midfielders, two attacking wide men and then Sterling could give Llorente some help up top.

Instead we got an extra centre back and 3-4-2-1. I voiced my concern before the game, it went as bad as it could have done. Three centre backs with both Dier and Skipp in front of them did indeed prove to be overkill. Amazingly, we had no width on the left with just the right footed rookie KWP stationed there. And Moura and Nkoudou didn't prove to be versatile, roaming dual 10's between the lines. I was shocked, I must say.........

I just don't get how Poch thought that was the best use of the players. It's a bad balance, and it's trying to invent certain players into something they're not. I don't see the logic.

The tactics left us pretty impotent, but team and individual performance didn't overcome that and we got a disastrous first half. On the whole the play meandered along - us trying and failing to play football, Palace doing very little in all truth. The game swung on key moments though, mostly that came out of very little. The opening goal there is a slight run of the ball in Palace's favour, somehow a Palace player barges into the box and Sanchez doesn't deal with it, Gazzaniga makes half a save and it's tapped in. Very soft. The second is pretty bizarre, I don't know if KWP mistimes his jump, is preoccupied with getting clattered/challenging the guy over his shoulder, whatever it was it was daft. So two bad moments against us, however we had two key moments of our own that could and should have levelled it. Nkoudou is somehow left alone next to the goal and invited to kick it in the net, he fails. Twice. And then we get a penalty of our own, the sure and steady 2018/19 vintage of Trippier steps up, and predictably smashes it wide.

At that point you knew it almost certainly wasn't going to be our day.

The second half we sacrificed a centre back, went 4-2-3-1 and plugged away, but found no way through the Palace brick wall defence. Again though, it was rather predictable 'Plan A' and not often very well executed at that with lots of silly errors and players unsuited to the task. Any possession we did string together disappeared down cul-de-sacs and caused them little problem. Only in brief spells did we flood the box and commit men forward and be a bit more direct, usually sticking to failing to thread eye of the needle passes until the final whistle put us out of our misery.

Multiple factors today I think. That team wasn't the best, but I feel could have got something out of that game at the least. Ultimately it was a combination - as a collective we were sloppy, individually some didn't step up, and Poch made some errors in how we set up and this is another time in recent weeks where I find myself posting that he needs to be a bit smarter and even just see things staring him in the face. We aren't getting to where he, we all, want us to be unless some things change and we show even more improvement.

Gazzaniga - Not sure what else he can do for the first goal. He makes a sharp stop low down and close to him. In a perfect world it gets parried wider but the player following in is right on top of it. Also seems to be (entirely reasonably) expected to save every penalty that is faced, going on some of the criticism.....

Foyth - Made some errors, quite a few actually, but stood up well and I like that he has a good head on his shoulders and a lot of the time when he does dig himself and the team a hole he gets back and rectifies the mistake. Use of the ball was ok, was the only one stepping out from the back and trying to get things going, and he defended superbly one v one at times. Probably our best out of that game, and out of the two centre back prospects he arguably has more about his game to work with I have to say.

Sanchez - I said it at half time, I'll say it again, but he has gone backwards at a rate of knots this season and I'm a little surprised that it gets so little comment. Big caveats that he is young and almost certainly suffering from not playing every week and getting taken in and out, but he seems to get a pass from the majority for being enthusiastic as fuck and always coming back for more and not backing down irrespective of how his performance is. His positioning his diabolical a lot of the time, as is his reading of the game and decision making. This isn't some academy kid thrown in, he's meant to be a 40 million pound signing after all..... Must, must start thinking about the game a bit more.

Vertonghen - Still looks a bit shaky and off his best as he comes back from injury. Not exactly the commanding presence of the backline.

Trippier - I think the criticism of him is getting a little silly. I've never rated him that highly and have probably been one of his more critical observers on here, It was a poor penalty and his set pieces weren't much better, his attacking contributions aren't great at the moment, but on the whole it was an average game from him. Defensively was ok, with the ball rudimentary. Some are just piling on the bandwagon though and making out every touch of his is the apocalypse. He's an easy target currently, others deserve some of the scrutiny too........

Dier - Needed the run out but looks nowhere near fit. Game passed him by as he waddled about doing the ultra basic. Still have to scratch my head every time as to why we play a back three plus him in midfield. Don't do it, Poch.

Skipp - Played like an 18 year old rookie in a misfiring unbalanced team and a struggling senior midfield partner. Did some good things, made some errors, never had a platform to play off and show his game. Didn't sink though, and I think he shows he has something about him.

KWP - Bad, bad error to concede the penalty. He's never going to be providing width down the left hand side, so I blame Poch more on that one. I thought he was mostly solid, did his defensive work when needed, showed a good touch, and looks much better when the game is at close quarters and he has people to link up with and play short passes/interchanges with.

Moura - Tried hard but not a good game, culminated in him leaving the ball three times in a row and just allowing the opposition to have it. However I don't understand how we are trying to use him. Why is he dropping deep and taking the ball then trying to get him running through half a dozen players, the chances of success are nil. Get him wider or higher up the pitch isolated against his man where he can do more damage.

Nkoudou - Got a chance, really didn't take it. Showed no understand of the game, where to run, how to make himself available, when or where to give a pass. etc. etc. Reminded us all that he is basically a headless chicken. The double miss was just woeful.

Llorente - I thought his hold up play was mostly pretty competent. We yet again though employed a style of play and shape that is not going to get anything out of him and leaves players wayyyyyyy away from him up front. It's like we're waiting for a miracle and for him to magically change his style of play. We need better, but if you aren't going to try to adapt and make best use of what you do have available then what's the point.

Subs:
Lamela - By default showed he is an actual No.10 and can float around and get on the ball, which automatically made that an improvement on Nkoudou and Moura playing there, but for all his touches I felt he achieved little of purpose.

Wanyama - Dier looked off the pace, Wanyama made him look nimble. Crabbed around trying to play as a quarterback, and just reminded us of his scattergun passing range (if we'd ever forget it......). At least he's back and hopefully can stay fit and get back to his best, but looked a long, long way off.

Sterling - Didn't really manage to get involved. I think he should have started though.

Gazza-6
Foyth- 8- Had Zaha in his pocket.
Sanchez-5 turned up after 20 mins and we were 1 down and was unimpressive
KWP-5- Bad 1st half playing out of position okay 2nd, no left foot not a left back.
Tripper-5- Seems like his confidence is gone along with his brain
Vert-5-played 45 mins
Dier-5- Back from injury, confidence probably low from semi loss not a decent game
Skipp-5-Backwards and sidewise 1st half, trying to force passes and gave away the ball a lot in 2nd half
Moura-6 Had a shot in the 1st half, decent second half, played some passes made a few runs at the defenders
Lamela-5 mins into the second half and he brought some nice energy floated between right wing to midfield, played it in front of their defenders didn't look to run in behind very often.
N'koudu-4- Poor, glued to the left wing 90 mins of the game, went to the right wing once and whipped in a decent cross and then went back into the abyss.
Llronte-4- Looked like he plays semi-pro. Didn't look before laying the ball off on several occasions. Made up the numbers.
Wanyama-looked rusty as expected
Sterling-Didnt see the harm in brining him on sooner

I didn;t enjoy that. I expected more talent from the players on the pitch.... However, I get why Pochettino went with that selection, I think the league has to be the priority now, considering all the injuries and obvious fatigue.

We were never going to get a footballing spectacle with so many periphery players on the pitch, but a few surprised me with their performances. Notably Sanchez, who was abysmal in possession of the ball. He looked positively frightened at one point, and fairly slow on his feet. Needs to up his game. He was ok overall, but I expect much more from the lad. It'll come i'm sure.

Trippier was getting slaughtered in the match thread. I know he didn;t set the world on fire, but, when Spurs actually managed to get the ball up the pitch in the second half, he was literally the only one that got the ball into the area and in dangerous positions. Was it hm that put the ball 1 inch off Llorente's feet? Lovely pass anyway. But he wasn;t as bad as people make out.

KWP isn;t a left back. He has never played particularly well when Poch has stuck him there. But, again, I get why he was put there, with Davies injured and Danny being made of glass. I think there is an argument to put Trippier up front and KWP behind him. That would be a far more balanced and effective right side. Not a permanent solution, but certainly one for the interim. I'd suggest at the expense of Lamela, who I don;t think is in the best vein of form.

Moura, I think he is flattering to deceive a bit. He is certainly capable of a lot more, but I wonder as I discussed with @Ghost Hardware if he needs better players around him, to thread the ball to his feet so he can use his pace. But his form is also poor at present.

However, the middle of the pitch, to be honest, even when we have a fully fit squad is missing that ability to find a key pass. That is the key area of the pitch we are failing in. Loads of us have been saying it for 2 seasons. But it may explain why the likes of Moura etc are looking decidedly average.

But, when all is said and done, it has been a long time since Spurs have suffered this many injuries all at once. All the suggested tweaks would only make marginal differences. Pochettino is doing the best he can. Was still poor today and I would;t be surprised if a few players might be looking over their shoulder if Pochettino gets his ruthless streak on at the close of play.

COYS.

Sliding scale of shitness.

From Foyth to Moura at the top to most of the others stinking up the place at the bottom.

looked like a mid table Championship side for most of that game.

Except that Championship side
would have tried harder
and passed more quickly
and more accurately.

OK Mauricio we get it
you think we need to put some flesh
on the bare bones.
point made.

Between Lamela and Foyth for me but Lamela edged it for getting our team attacking and being involved in nearly every attack. Should have been on from the beginning but I guess with injuries and no signings Poch is sacrificing the cups to focus on top4.

Foyth was superb. One on one with Zaha was fantastic pretty much every time

Our biggest issue was not having someone connect defence and attack. Dier and Skipp and cannot play together, Skipp is pretty much a clone of Dier so we need someone who can play the ball. As a result both played poor.

KWP recovered well.

Llorente skidmarked pants

GKN player better when Lamela came on

Lucas needs players around him that can pick a pass. We just seemed to keep giving him the ball when he was looking to come back and find another route through their defence.

Others can't be bothered rating

Hugo Lloris should have done better today.
Poor distribution as usual. He should have done better with that penalty too.

Gazza should be our first choice!

It's days like that you wish you had a restricted view ticket!

Foyth & KWP huge positives (apart from the obvious moment of madness)

Thought Skipp tried his heart out all game and can only improve with game time.

George please get your coat, find Vincent and I'll drive both of you to the airport

To lose one cup game in a week may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness.
Where to start.
First half
our worst performance EVER.
Second half better.
So that's our second worst performance
EVER.

Lamela made a difference (7)
Foyth (7) was positive and reasonably competent. One of the few that looked like a footballer
Gazzaniga (6) should have done better with the first.
Trippier (5) Very average overall. One or two decent crosses. Penalty awful
Verts (6) OK looks to be positive but like Sanchez ponderous on the ball.
KWP (6) Out of position, cut back every time on his good (only) foot. Silly penalty error.
Moura, N'Koudou (4) pair of headless chickens.
Llorente (4) Very poor in front of goal which is unfortunate if you are the front man.
Skipp (6) kept his head when all about him others were losing theirs. Some poor passing
...............but always looking for the ball and trying to make something happen
Dier (5) Not fit I assume. Did very little. Good or bad.

Embarrassing, ponderous, unexciting uncreative a nightmare watch
and it was all going so well.
How much are they on?

Gazziniga 6 not at fault for their goals

Trippier 5 clever free kick and good build up but terrible pen

Foyth 8 MOTM handled Zaha very well in the 2nd half
Sanchez 6 clumsy at times
Verts 7 fine

KWP 5 good on the ball but stupid penalty

Skipp 7 nice touches and passes
Dier 6 fine

Nkoudou 6 minimal impact and had the whole 90 mins
Lucas 7 showed glimpses of taking players on winning free kicks

Llorente 7 made a couple of chances with limited service

Subs
Lamela 7 dominated the ball, needed that killer instinct to get us the goal
Wanyama 6 nothing of note
Sterling N/A

Poch 5 don't agree with 5 at the back. Should've bought on Rose and Winks too. No Eriksen on the bench. Clearly deprioritised a chance of a trophy but sympathise with injuries and keeping players fit

Gazzaniga - 6 - Very quiet night but for their first goal might have done better

KWP - 6 - Not a bad game but hopelessly mispositioned for handball
Foyth - 8 - Good game....I seriously believe that Poch sees a bit of this bloke in himself as a player. Future captain ....somewhere
Vertonghen - 6 - Fair but got an early night
Davinson - 5 - Shaky on the night
Trippier - 4 - David Beckham has a lot to answer for when footballers try to overwork the ball....Like Walker before him Trips is hesitating too often and killing momentum

Dier - 5 - Jog trotted throughout
Skipp - 5 Too many forced passes....Dier little help

NKoudou - 4 - Last chance to impress before Turkey loan? Didn't impress
Lucas - 5.5 - Ordinary night

Llorente - 5 - A couple of half chances....Poor

Lamela - 6 - Seemed angry when coming on...forgotten how/when to shoot?
Wanyama - 6 - See Dier
Sterling - NET
