Yeah, unfortunately we've slipped back over the last 2 years, we're pretty much back to where we were under Jol. I guess we just have to get used to missing out to the likes of Everton until we can build ourselves back up a bit. Cant help feeling this is a pretty major blow if it happens, Martinez can really build a team around this guy for the next 3/4 years.

I don't really agree mate.

Its just the fans 'need' for signings and that associated feel good factor. What people are guilty of is putting too much emphasis on it. Yes we need some tweaks and improvements but we need to remember the amount of quality players we brought in last summer. They now have a season under their belt and hopefully will start performing considerably better under the guidance of a bright and ambitious manager.

We're stacked with quality, people forget this, we've just needed a proper manager to get more from them - individually and collectively.

Back to the Jol days? No way for me.

People have been laughing at our signings and writing them all off as flops, more or less, but we'll see where we are in the end under Pochettino with them.

Agree, but I don't see Everton getting 4th twice like we did under Redknapp. The competition is harder now. Back then Liverpool were stuck in a rut and Arsenal were going through a shitty patch too, albeit still managing to finish above us. Chelsea had a stinker of a year in the league too, despite somehow nabbing the CL title.

I really can't see Everton breaking up the top 4. Perhaps not even making the top 5, unless one of those big clubs has a stinker of a year. They'll duke it out with us for the scraps most likely. Martinez can build a team around him, as you said, but it's not going to get them any higher than they finished last season, I don't think.

Its all good talking about the quality we have, but how many get in Evertons team, I'd say its a 50/50 split. Anyway, so if we're not 'back to the Jol days' I'm assuming you believe we're still as good as when Harry was at the Club and we havent regressed at all? Sorry mate but we have to be realistic about where we now stand as a Club in terms of attracting players.

We should do what we can to get this guy...hes an excellent player, young and will only get better
Theres still hope until he signs on that dotted line, I mean look how the Davies deal swayed, looked like he was joining Liverpool yesterday morning, now seems we've signed him.

Any idea what the offer was? If it's around £25m, surely we should try and get Balotelli instead.

I think the Club might see 25m on Balo as a risky investment, if he were to fall out with Poch and start sulking, how much is he worth then? For me Lukaku is a much safer investment as much as I'd love to see Balo at the Lane on a personal level.

Balotelli's matured a lot since his City days. He's settled down and has a baby/on the way. Even if he was an ass, he's still young and there's no doubting his quality.

Mate, he still sulks, I saw him do it towards the back end of last season. But yeah, he's quality, one of the most complete strikers in Europe IMO(when he's on form). I'm just trying to see it from the Clubs point of view, it would be a risk.

If Lukaku is going to snub us, why not pay Chelsea an extra million or two so they reject Everton's bid?
Because Chelsea doesn't give a shit about an extra million or two?

They'd rather sell at whatever valuation they set instead of flip-flop around and potentially piss off teams they may want to buy from in the future.

Liverpool Echo done a piece based on their blue nose sources suggesting its his relationship with Martinez thats the biggest pull, plus getting so close to 4th last season made him believe they can go one better this year. The whole club and team impressed him and he felt at home there.

However, that could just be all Blueshite propaganda. They do it a lot in the Echo to manage the fans as Kenwright is skint and will never spend so the bluenoses are always fuming at him so he constantly does PR bollocks to try and keep them on side.

I personally don't see Everton improving this season. They relied so heavily on Barry and Osman but they need to decline/break down eventually. No Deulofeu this season as well. I personally felt they were incredibly fortunate with injuries on the whole last year, and if they can repeat that good fortune they might be fine, but their lack of overall quality of depth will be tested should any of their key men go down. But then again, I also believe Martinez is one of the best managers (easily) in the PL.

I doubt whether Chelsea will deal with us, but if they are open to it and he is available for £25m we should be all over it, especially as we are considering paying a similar amount for Schneiderlin, a good player but in a position where we are quite overloaded.

Even if you believe that our current striking options are good enough ( which I don't ), both Ade and Soldado are pushing 30. Lukaku is young and only going to get better and would secure that position for years.

He may not be the most technically proficient player, but he is no donkey and is a perfect fit for the PL.

Well he cost chelsea 20m I believe 2 years ago and since then has scored 1 in 2 starts for 2 years. So if it is 25m then that is a very good price in this current market
